Trying to make a judgement on Ward after a disastrous rookie season and a few preseason drives is ridiculous. People need to slow down trying to determine whether or not Ward is a franchise QB or a bust, there is no way to have a honest opinion on that at this point. Look around the league at the QBs starting and doing well and their journey and there is one thing that's clear about these #1 picks(or highly drafted) QBs. The teams fail the QBs so often. Baker Mayfield, Trevor Lawernce(both #1 picks) and Sam Darnold. They were on dysfunctional teams set up for failure and eventually got into better situations and suddenly could play. The Browns, Jags and Jets were terrible situations. Even guys like Allen and Stafford had serious questions and struggles their first 3 to 4 years. No QB would have done well last year in the situation Ward was in. Inept coaching staff, terrible pass blocking OL and pitiful weapons. All things like Mayfield and Darnold had against them early in their careers. Last year was not like 2019 with Mariota and the offensive problems were all on the QB. Ward has the tools, talent and a great work ethic. He has correctable issues and needs experience. All Cam Ward needs is the game to slow down, which comes with more playing time. He also needs a good offensive supporting cast(including coaching/play calling) and especially quality pass protection. He's not going to play like the #1 pick should this season. We're early in the process and it's going to take time, like it did with many of the other QBs mentioned.16 points

Cam Ward analysis heading into year two
rns90 and 4 others reacted to BudsOilers for a topic
It's far too early to determine where he'll land. All of what you point out is valid. He was in an awful situation surrounded by poor talent and coaching. This year, there's no question that on paper the offensive talent is better and Daboll has far more credentials than Callahan ever did. With more experience, the game should slow down. It certainly won't happen overnight. Teams do fail QB's and it's almost always because they either overdraft them and/or play them immediately when they aren't ready - because of the things like poor talent around them, being super young, and overwhelmed. Even the examples provided - none of those guys are considered top tier QB's and are somewhere in the 11-20 range in most evaluations. Of that bunch - Darnold probably is the most talented of the bunch from a passer standpoint and it took him going to Shanahan for a year to get him squared away and reset. The real issue is whether the issues he does have mechanically (and he does have them) is in fact correctable for a 24-year-old trying to do it at the NFL level at full speed. It directly ties to the true ceiling he has as a player - cornerstone of the team for the next 10 years, mid starter, move on in 2 or 3 years). I think it's a bigger challenge than the picture you paint here. If it was easily correctable, it would have been done already. Yes he's got a cannon arm but that's truly the only elite trait he has. He CAN throw with anticipation but it's not at a consistency level that I'd say it warrants being labeled elite. I fully expect the Titans to rely heavy on a run game and try to make things easier for Ward with pre-snap motion, play action, etc. and then build from there. To make that work though, the erratic blips we see a bit too much need to go down in frequency. If all goes well and the defense can be decent, they can win games that way. The worry is that if Ward and the team struggle, the patience of the fans and local media is tiny. He will not get the Mariota treatment of excuse making ad naseum.5 points -

probably not gonna happen that way. It's gonna take some games to get Cam comfortable in the offense...and for Daboll to figure that out as well. I doubt that the Jets are gonna be 100% dialed in week one either. When Cam get more comfortable with the offense and hopefully has an offensive line he can reasonably trust you will probably see the off script stuff happen less. Cam plays loose but I don't think he's some gunslinging run around QB. and I'd add that Cam is most likely thinking a lot when he drops back considering it's a new offense.. He doesn't have great footwork so those combined is going to make him look worse than he is. If he can get to the point where he's playing loose and free without thinking I think he's good enough to overcome the poor footwork. Learning the offense so he can talk shit and let his competitive nature come out and just play football is the most important thing right now. Footwork and mechanics should not be completely ignored but also shouldn't be the priority right now. A young QB like Cam has to be good enough with his flaws to be competitive in this league and continue playing for the next 3-4 years while getting better and improving those flaws over that time span. That's not all gonna happen in the next 2 weeks before the Jets game.3 points -

From what I’ve seen , the off script pocket stuff and the lack of fundamentals at times ( the fumble last game) are obvious . I think he does maybe get a small pass because they are intergrating a new offense and personnel . But at some point this year he’ll have to show consistency and play well.3 points

It's too early to panic but the mechanics/footwork/accuracy issues that keep on popping up with Ward were obvious pre-draft and always made his ceiling debatable. Off script wow plays are nice but the best QB's can play consistently from the structure of the offense. He got a pass from 2025 because the coaching staff was completely inept but he'll need to show some real growth once the games start for real. The leash on these top draft pick QB's isn't 5 years like with Pineapple Tebow or retard VY.3 points -

I'm perfectly happy sitting in the patience and excuse making camp this early for a guy who's driven like him a who flashes brilliance like him. This isn't the case where it's everyone else's fault (though the barriers last year were immense) and he has no flaws but he has enough upside and drive that I have plenty of hope remaining that he'll overcome whatever flaws do exist.2 points -

Anyone who has any kind of emotional intelligence or relationships with adults knew from the get go that these 2 were fucking from the initial release of the photos and info. The efforts by Vrabel, Russini, NE, and the Athletic were inept in terms of damage control. Russini will never recover from being the NFL whore and any goodwill Vrabel has built will go away once they inevitably regress now that they don't have the easiest schedule in the last 30 years.....2 points -

3 absolutes....Death, Taxes, and Tards on TR. The Radio of QB's had to be forced back into the Jags game on 9/7. Gets injured. Skips the mandatory medical examination and MRI the next morning and the team can't get a hold of him. Then the retard storms out of his house with a gun after telling his personal therapist he had suicidal thoughts and wanted to quit football (AGAIN). His own business manager chased after him in his car going 90 MPH and the therapist calls Fisher telling him all of this. But it's Fisher's fault! No it's all on the lazy, entitled, immature, weak bust of a QB. https://www.espn.com/nfl/news/story?id=3584636 As for the tard babble in here about W/L record, the VY data sample is a prime example of why assigning wins and losses to QB's requires context that many of the morons on here can't even comprehend. They were winning most of the games in 2006/2007 in spite of his QB play, not because of it.2 points -

What I'll say about Restrepo is he's silenced the critics who said he can't play. He's made a lot of really good catches in TC. He's a lock for the PS, and it isn't a charity spot. If Wandale goes down I don't think we would miss too much, though it would be an obvious downgrade, but not nearly as much of one as people would believe. He's less dynamic, but has great hands and a natural feel for the game. He just isn't a ST'er even if they've had him out there for it. You don't keep a backup slot on the 53 who isn't a really good ST player as either returner or gunner. Not enough snaps.1 point -

I'll say this, I've learned enough that if he doesn't shine by year 4 then it's his own limitations and not correcting his flaws. Coaching matters for optimization and finding the right scheme fit, but talent at QB always shines through if you can keep him healthy. From what I've seen with the kid, he has the exact mindset to be great, and he has the talent to make it happen, but he has to clean up the footwork and pocket mechanics, which are linked.1 point -

I'd be concerned if he thinks he's earned the right to be sloppy in preseason because he's accomplished nothing of note so far. The far more likely reality is that he has footwork/mechanics issues just like he did as a rookie and in college. The scary thing is that the examples of guys who fix that while in the NFL are extremely rare. Hopefully he's one of the few and Daboll and Tierney can fix it.1 point -

Not too sure we can judge his footwork in preseason. He clearly was just being sloppy because he knows it’s preseason. Once the games that matter begin he will obviously have the best footwork going, since the games matter now.1 point -

Anyone arguing for VY is making a fool of themselves. Of course Fisher didn't want VY starting. He's a functionally illiterate pea brain with the mental toughness of a skinless grape. VY went on to sign with 3 teams he didn't even make the team with. GB cut him in camp without another potential back-up. Dinger was ahead of his time. He used read option type stuff with the pea brain at QB and did a great job. They also played a laughingly easy schedule after VY took over. They played two good teams and got easily beaten in both. It's not so much about it being so easy to stop the run game. It's just rushing yards are hollow and don't correlate to wins. CJ had 17 carries for 128 yards in a 59-0 loss. He had 21 carries for 142 yards in a 42-17 loss to SD.... whoopie And lol @ defending VY.....1 point
