Callahan gives playcalling to Hardegree (QB Coach)

A big part of the feedback from players last year was that he wasn't present enough on the defensive side and focused too much on the offense. I would say that's exactly what this is. He still finds himself too busy w/ the minutiae of the day to day business of the offense so he's trying to pass that off to someone else and be more of the HC of the team in general.

Is it a midseason firing? No, they'd just fire him. If it doesn't work will he be in trouble? Yes.

The most interesting part is that the play calling didn't go to Holz.

Callahan is essentially fired and they're going to let him ride it out.    This is exactly like Brinker taking over the GM duties Carthon's last season.    Callahan was hired to ca

This move...a non firing but stripping of authority....keeps AAS from being labeled impulsive again.

The funny thing is there wasn't an easier situation for Callahan to keep his job. They decision makers were publicly squashing expectations and talking about patience. He basically had a free pass. Al

He's saying this of course because his next job is going to be as a play calling OC.

I don't know. I think he's more likely to step back into a QB coach role. He's not successfully steered an offense and this was his first place calling plays (and it's not gone well). I'm sure he'll want to be a playcalling OC, but I'm not buying that he'll get hired as one immediately after he's fired.

Suppose things get a better on offense and they win a few games the remainder of the season and Ward improves.

Callahan is going to have to fire his best friend and promote Hardegree to OC this offseason to have any chance to keep his job in that scenario.

(Most likely though, Callahan will be fired)

Just now, Tex in a Can said:

Holtz is like chopped liver in the organization.

Maybe. I don't really know his role. I can see why they'd give the play calling responsitilities to Hardegree as he's got experience doing it but then... why isn't he the OC and Holz the QB coach? Seems they think Holz needed help last year and brought in Hardegree but didn't want to demote Holz. This is essentially a demoting of Holz imo

He's not in trouble... yet. Again, Jim Mora went 3-13 w/ Peyton Manning. This is a very complicated QB driven offense. It's going to be about how much Ward improves as much as anything else.

When someone is obscenely bad at such a basic thing, making that thing an even bigger responsibility for them rarely turns out well.  Though I guess they didn't really have any other options, as demoting a HC to coordinator and promoting someone else looks ridiculous.
