Even the so called great ones (Shanahan, Reid, Payton) have always struggled with game management. Maybe there's something to it. It's very difficult to do both, even for the top playcallers. And for someone like Callahan who had no experience doing either going into last year? It's no wonder he's struggled so much. Yep, have thought about that before for sure. I think you have to have many years experience as a play caller to be even manageable at both. Mike McCarthy had the same issue. Mularkey and Smith both said they didn't think it was wise to try and do both - although Mularkey tried in his first stint as HC.

Hell, all I want is to is to see if the lack of playcalling responaibilities helps him to improve his shitty game management. By all means, keep the pitchforks within reach, but hold off for now. Nah, can't have that. The vampires are thirsty AF! Mythos27, and titanruss

While I'm skeptical that Callahan can improve significantly in his game managing skills he's the head coach, I want to see if there's any improvement. Ultimately it's in everyone associated with the team's best interest for this to work out. Firing him, despite the fan anger, is not in anyone with the team's best interest. It would signify failure and starting over again at the position.

Many questioned it at the time of his hiring and it was discussed a fair bit on the board. The threads are still there. His #1 selling point among posters on this board was that he was bringing with him a "modern" pass first offense that would be the complete opposite of Vrabel's first down-heavy offense. At no point do I remember conversations on here about expectations that he would be an amazing playcaller; we largely wanted to see if he could do it all. Him publicly failing is certainly a bad look and this is certainly not a positive for him but calling plays was not a condition of his employment and I don't know where people are getting this. It's also not like a ton of very good head coaches don't call plays. Anyways, the hope here is that the reason Callahan was trash at game management is because he was distracted with calling the offense and can't multi-task for shit. We'll find out pretty quickly if that's the case. This is definitely a bad look and yet another humiliation but it might save his job. plus he's a nepo, so thats 2 strikes against him. another reason why fassel as interim would be terrible. I think the bar has been raised for him. He doesn't get the benefit of the doubt, if he ever did. He's got to win games. Just not embarrassing the team, as I mentioned, is a necessary but not suffiicient condition. Only winning will do that. I see two glimmers of hope for him. The schedule lightens up and maybe he gets some players, especially the OL, back from injury. Mythos27

Sounds like the guy that Callahan has in the booth is not helping him out at all. Mythos27, and DCTitan 1

Mythos27
There are tons of HCs with good offenses that don't call plays. Harbaugh doesn't call plays, neither do Dan Campbell, McDermott in Buffalo, Dan Quinn, etc. Nick Sirianni just won the superbowl after being forced to give up play calling duties himself. You can be just as successful with that model. Starkiller, airmcnair22, and begooode
