My thoughts.   I post infrequently nowadays but do want to do so tonight.  I have vacillated with each new entry into the HC/OC sweepstakes.  I studied what I could with available data on ea

FWIW on F Words Zach Lyons just said he heard the interview between McDaniel and the Titans went “very well”.

Most of the time, they'll have enough of a track record to predict how they will do.  I was extremely high on MacDonald and Coen because their track records were so good.  I'm not sure if there's anyone like that this year - Minter looks pretty good, getting impressive play out of some former Titans' rejects and 2 consecutive years of top defenses despite pretty ordinary talent.

sure buddy. You may have been right about Callahan in the end but the fact is most of time there is no way to tell which coaches are going to succeed. too many variables.

The point stands that hiring a coordinator who's never called plays is extremely risky.

Sure but that was outweighed by everything else. Its easy in hindsight but the hire was universally praised.

Hot take: I dont think Callahan's failures as a HC have anything to do with him never calling plays. It was his leadership and inability to curtail his dad that did him in.

Well, I called it out around the time along with his background with great QBs, so there's that much. Won't speak for anyone else.

And to your second point, no one is saying it was the only reason he failed, so not sure how that's a hot take, but either way it definitely played a role in his downfall. He was completely in over his head on multiple fronts and being the play caller took away from his ability to concentrate on fixing flaws in the rest of his process.

I like callahan the person and his willingness to chat with media. I thought the scheme would be decent...

But it was a BIG discussion that he only had worked with superstars before and that he had never been allowed to call plays. He wasnt a universal homerun for anyone with a brain.

We will gloss over any red flags when the new hire comes to town but we are hopefully smart enough in the FO to not hire some idiot that was born on 3rd and thought he hit a triple that just hires his completely inexperienced friends for the major coordinator positions.

The whole process was a giant red flag.

Just seems really high risk. I've watched a lot of his interviews, pressers, etc. and he just doesn't seem like a great leader to me. Obviously he knows football - but he's limited on experience and I just can't quite understand the hype. I see him as more of a scheme guru guy. He definitely has a good agent though!

Definitely a worthy candidate, but the fit just doesn't seem quite right. Could be totally wrong.

He comes across as a slightly less impressive version of Brian Callahan to me, just purely as a candidate, as a fan from the outside looking in. I do think he'll be interviewed, but he'd need to be very very impressive to get the job I think. In which case, I would of course trust Brinker/Borgonzi's judgement.

What about him doesn’t seem like a good leader? All reports and just seeing how he interacts with players seems pretty good from everything I’ve listened and read about him.

Largely is the head coach of the defense there and has coached up a defense that doesn’t have a bunch of elite players to be a top 5 unit the past two years.

Plus him already being a play calling defensive coordinator already gives him more experience than Callahan had.

He just doesn’t seem like a dynamic or charismatic leader to me in the way that Anthony Weaver or Robert Saleh or even Matt Nagy is. I suppose that’s a matter of opinion though. Campanile I also find to be considerably more compelling as a leader/motivator than either Shula or Minter.

I have no doubt that he’s a great DC, I just wonder if he’s more of a brainiac scheme guru or if he’s also a dynamic people manager. The limited experience is also a factor for me.

Granted, it seems like Saleh/Weaver may be out of reach. Hopefully the recent lists incorrectly omitted them.

Without a doubt it’s wide open to opinion and interpretation, but you seem like you don’t believe what has been out there about him and how he’s largely been in charge of the defense.

What do you define as limited experience though? Did you consider Vrabel “inexperienced” when we hired him with only being a DC for one year (an awful one at that)?

Dude has been coaching for 15 years, 10 of that in the NFL. He’s worked as a position coach at DB, LB, and EDGE prior to becoming a DC. I feel like just cause he’s a younger coach, people are assuming he’s is inexperienced. Shoot he’s ancient compared to when McVay took the Rams job in 2017 at just 30 years old.

If Ward develops into a franchise QB the new coach will be smart, if he doesn't he'll be a terrible hire

And that applies to all the retread coaches out there.  Almost universially they failed because they didn't have a QB.  Doesn't matter if it's Saleh, Nagy, Daboll, whomever....it's the storyline.  And that's what makes the Titans job very appealing....they've got one.
