For some reason, some would rather trust the talking heads than the scouts and GM’s that live and breathe this stuff. Not saying Ran is always right, he’s going to miss and take players he shouldn’t. But to put stock into all that the talking heads say and that makes you “come around” on a pick is crazy to me. 

I don't pay attention to individuals but if you look at consensus boards over time, teams that align with consensus boards tend to pan out better than those who don't. Obviously, the scouts for the team know how that player will fit and have access to things that guys like Brugler simply don't but if 15 professionals look at a prospect and say he's a 5th round talent and your team takes him in the 2nd, and then they do the same thing in the third and then draft a guy rated as an UDFA in the fourth - It doesn't necessarily mean that they had a bad draft but it's the blind faith to not question those sorts of picks. 

 

Again, context has to be applied and none of these statements give you a black and white answer, but I think it's ridiculous to just ingore the information available to you as a fan and accept on blind faith whatever the organization does.

The draft industrial complex is very real. Do you believe these guys are trading info with GMs leading up the draft and know team's draft boards? or do you believe a BB who basically said the draft board is top secret until more people get brought into the fold 24 hours before the draft which leads to leaks?

 

personally I think the vast majority of these guys watch tape and rank players. Then they piece together who teams have spent time with at the various pre-draft functions like the combine, pro days, in person visits, etc... and they pawn it off as insider information. Honestly ask yourself if you ran a NFL team as a GM, would you really be talking to draft analysts leading up to the draft and more importantly, would you give them real information you don't even trust your staff with?

Considering 1st round bust rates and the fact the average career is less than 4 years I'd say the consensus big boards are wrong just as much as everyone else is.

My point with these players is we don't always have the whole story and shit going down right before the draft doesn't mean the players will be busts. Character concerns, controversy, etc. I realize these situations are very different, but my point was not every player that we are hearing about predraft goes on to be a continued point of noise or drama. 

 

Probably a better comparison is Dak Prescott. His situation was pretty similar I think.

I'm not here blasting the guy or the pick. I'm just defending being skeptical. I don't give 2 shits he had a dui, I don't care he is fat. I don't care he thought about quiting football. 

 

But I sure as hell would keep him on a short ass leash if I were to hire the dude. Which they are if the contract stuff is true. 

 

Ok I kinda blasted the pick. It's an overdraft. This is the Bowers discussion all over again where to love up to the draft spot he is going to have to be really really fucking good. Not a HoF player like Bowers but still a probowl/allpro when you can get solid to good nosetackles anywhere.

 

He does have top 50 talent though. Just stay away from the cheese burgers. Maybe Surely Casey would be a better mentor. He is more like Casey + 50 pounds than most of these other comps i see.

But yeah - there's an element of scheme and culture fit that is team centric and beyond the draft media enterprise.

And if NT was more valued he would have been even higher. Over the last ten years I would say the best prospects in no particular order would have been Poe, Vea, Shelton, Travis, Brown, and Sweat.
