preseason game performance is way down the list of what gets evaluated, especially for veterans... Clearly Saleh doesn't give a shit about what he saw from the 1st team tonight. Now ask yourself why? because he wants to get through it without injuries so they are as close to full strength as possible for the jets in a few weeks.

Did the Seahawks game plan their back-ups more like a real game in order to prepare them for a real game situation? Possibly, who knows. 

 

bingo. We knew Barton sucked in coverage before tonight's game. We learned nothing about what he can do either way. it was already a given. The joint practices carry far more weight. But I'm done trying to convince some preseason homer about the value of it. The way teams treat it is all you need to know if you take the blinders off.

Is Spears good in any situation? Objectively speaking, what has he shown to justify being the RB2?

The scrimmage work is obviously way more important than the PSGs...

Great hands and elusiveness in the open field. Ability to bounce a run outside and a limited ability to break a tackle time and again.  He's a classic 3rd down back. He is anything other than a 4th down back.

According to PFF he led all backs in forced missed tackles on catches. I assume they meant on a per catch basis, not total. Anyway I do think he is very good at the 2nd level but this is mitigated by his complete absence of any vision at the LOS. He simply has zero feel or decisiveness when handed the ball. I want to take another look at the4th & 1 run before I blame him but it looked fairly well blocked to me & shouldve been an easy conversion. He looked totally indecisive to me.

 

Frankly I think that Julius Chestnut is a significantly better runner than Spears & should be given all of his backup carries on 1st & 2nd down. He obviously has more size than Spears & is a 100x more natural a runner. He’s way more decisive hitting the hole & very well may have more home run speed…

@Face Chestnut is fucking terrible and shouldn't even have a roster spot.  Spears may not be any good but this stance is crazy.

The missed tackles look great on paper,  but he's still below average as a receiver in terms of EPA outside of his rookie season.  And he's downright bad as a runner - like you said, he can be effective, but only when he's given such a vast amount of space to run that anyone would be successful.  The likelihood that we could find someone better in FA - or even on this own roster - seems very high.

 

The coaches have been stubborn about the RB utilization for as long as I can remember.  Chestnut has been on the active roster for years and has played well in very limited time, but they absolutely refuse to even try to see what he looks like with a decent sample size of snaps.  Instead, they're staying committed to a RB who will only further the struggles of a bad offense

The lateral motion and just sheer foot speed will have him starting over Barton in short order.
