Positional value is over stated. Context in terms of team needs, generational talent and team strategy and player usage are much more important.

It's overstated at times, but when you can get similar production from guys drafted later, positional value does matter.  If we traded down and picked him outside the top 5-10, ok.  But as @scine09 says below, drafting a RB at #4 means your giving him the ball a ton.  That shouldn't happen a year after drafting your QB since he should be throwing it a lot.

I'm about as anti-RB high in the draft as anyone so I am trying to tell myself that if they take him it's to do a lot more than just carry the ball.  It would have to be because if they're taking him with the idea that he's going to a bell cow carry the ball 25-30 times a game guy it's a waste of both a draft pick and also of the QB's talents.

Bingo.

No idea where this nugget fits so thought it might worth starting a thread for all Titans non HC offseason discussion.   This was meant to happen last offseason but Sweat never showed up so

Who will we draft? The answer has been there the whole time.

Wowza great deal for us.
also: Just how bad exactly is that leg injury if he’s willing to settle for this?

Idk if he's necessarily scared of not getting paid because of his leg. Recall just how hyped he was when we drafted Ward. I think he wants to keep playing with Cam because maybe he understands Cam might be his best shot at getting a ring before he retires.

Bingo.

That is not what Saleh has been saying. They want to talk the pressure off of Cam.. and not require him to throw it a ton.   So that the offense can have success without him and he can grow into that dominant impact role.

Do I love that (no pun intended)-  no.   I get it and I think that's what you get when you hire a defense DC as head coach.  They are going to want to lean on the running game a ton - is my take.  And let Cam be Cam in specific moments and even in other moments- make his reads and throws easier 90% of the time.    Its a strategy to quickly win games.   Its debatable if its the best strategy to develop a qb to his peak quickly.

CJ had several plays where he ran actual routes and fought the ball.

A serendipitous autocorrect haha that was his problem receiving. He fought the ball and had a real tough time catching in stride. He always did a hesitate and look up field before moving. Could have easily been coached out of him.

@IowaOiler, what if they view Love is more of a hybrid guy (RB and receiver)?  Would it make a difference to you?

I think Love's possible usage as a "receiver" might be overblown. Go look at the receiving depth numbers for Bijan Robinson and Jahmyr Gibbs. The overwhelming vast majority of their targets come either behind the LOS or in the short area of the field. It was the same story for LeSean McCoy and Devin Singletary when they were in Buffalo with Daboll from 2018-2021.

I wouldn't expect it to be any different for Love. Which is perfectly fine... they're all RBs. It just feels like when people hear talk of Love being a "duel threat" as a RB and receiver that they may be thinking they're going to have him lining up in the slot and running slants, posts, digs, etc. His receiving work is probably going to be on par with all those other backs.

Damn.. funny catch.

His drop rate was low and his catch rate was on par or better than most receiving backs. Was he an elite route runner and catcher of the football? no. was he given the opportunity to know if he was capable ? not really.

95% of his routes were either running at a LB while looking back for a pass, sitting next to a LB with his back turned, or a screen/flare. I remember him making 2-3 spectacular catches on terrible passes while lined up wide... but those attempts were few and far between.

I'm not saying he was great at it, but the irrational homer hate swings as hard as the homer love when agendas and losses are piling up.

He doesn't have nearly as much in the stat-book and film as a receiver as you'd think when listening to the analysts.

Oh yeah, he won't be lining up as a receiver, at least often, but he should have an extensive route tree out of the backfield.

He doesn't, but what he does have his highlights of him having ridiculously sticky hands while catching the ball in stride.

I don't expect him to be running deep posts. But at #4 I would expect him to do more than run basic screens and serve as a check down. He doesn't need a ton of snaps as a "receiver". The important thing is to give the offense the flexibility to run multiple packages from the same personnel grouping. When Deryck Henry was in the game the offense was extremely predictable because he was basically a one trick pony.

Bingo.

It's over simplification if you just look at production.

I never like the what did CJ win argument as a reason to question that move. What did Megatron win? Or Myles Garrett? It’s a team game. Doesn’t make them less valuable. You still want guys like that on your team. Stafford didn’t win much until he joined the Rams. Different sport, but Shohei Ohtani won nothing for years until he joined the Dodgers and ditched the Angels.

Love wouldn’t need to line up as a WR. They would just need to use him as a receiver out of the backfield like teams use McCaffrey or Kamara or Gibbs.

He apparently could line up as a WR, but primarily it just means he’s a 3rd down back.
