Nash
Wasn't it actually David Carr that said it??
Tomachek
Just now, Nash said: Wasn't it actually David Carr that said it?? Correct, but David has the inside scoop from Derek. Raiders also go from 12-4 in 2016 to 6-10 when he took over as OC while Fielding one of the worst offenses in the NFL.
Bulluck4dmvp
So we hired him as a position coach, and it seems as though he did an excellent job as a position coach. Good hire to me. SuperFreak90, and SleepingTitan

You don't think people can learn something after having a tough first go at it? At least he knows what doesn't work! nine
Downing seems like a solid hire, and he’s taking over a position with established talent, experience, and depth already on the roster. It seems like pretty good spot for both sides. I imagine he’ll have input during the game planning discussions....but aside from maybe helping Smith avoid some of the mistakes he made in Oakland, I doubt Downing will have any direct involvement with play calling. titanruss, and tgo
Popular Post tgo
He’s one of the guys I had on my list. Was a rising coaching star a couple years back. I think he’ll be able to really help Smith with the passing game and be a resource as the only other guy on staff with play calling experience. That said, I do have concern with him from the perspective of coaching tight end technique and credibility with the players at that position. Usually you have a guy who played TE or OL coaching the position - someone with blocking experience (Downing played and has always coached QBs). He’s been around long enough though, that maybe some of that is alleviated, along with his year of experience in Minnesota last year. Then again, Smith played OL and coached TEs. Dews played TE and coaches RBs. Carter played TE and coaches OL. Steckel played LB but coaches WRs. Downing’s early background is in research and analytics - so that probably appealed to Vrabel as well. He’s young enough where Arthur Smith should be able to influence him to coach the group to his liking, whereas guys like Chudzinski and Chryst would be set in their ways. As a younger coach, He’ll have more of a collaborative working relationship with Smith, Carter, Dews, etc. rather than having a more senior coach lording over Smith. It’s crazy that Downing started his coaching career at the high school level when he was only 19.
