  2. It still amazes me how impossible it is to have a conversation with Republicans.

  3. nah, dude. This has just be rehashed over and over and over again. Talking about Biden's accomplishments and what he's done while in office has been done repeatedly. Hell, there's an entire thread or 2 about it. On the right.. there's even a "Biden wins" image that was posted in this very thread that goes through them. Chips Act. Inflation Reduction Act. Pact Act. American Rescue Plan. etc etc etc. But let's be honest. You don't know anything that's in any of those things. So you want to boil it down to something simpler w/o context b/c you think it's a win for you b/c Trump left us in such a horrible state and heading into such a bad place when he left office. And no one wants to go through the trouble for an obviously disingenuous premise.

  5. This isn’t really that complex. Russia had Trump undermining our ties with NATO, eliminating vast economic sanctions against Russia that had been put in place by Obama, and withholding defense funding meant for Ukraine. The longer that goes on, the easier it would be for Russia to weaken Ukraine. After Trump left office, there was no longer any advantage for Putin to delay.

  8. Trump Plots to Pull Out of NATO October 23, 2023 at 1:18 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 145 Comments Rolling Stone: “Donald Trump wanted to pull the United States out of NATO during his first term, but was repeatedly talked out of it by senior administration officials.” “For a possible second term in the White House, the 2024 Republican presidential frontrunner is already discussing how he could actually get it done, if his demands aren’t met by NATO. He and his policy-wonk allies are also gaming out how he could dramatically wind down American involvement to merely a ‘standby’ position in NATO, in Trump’s own words.” https://politicalwire.com/2023/10/23/trump-plots-to-pull-out-of-nato/ Trump continuing to plan out how he can help Russia by getting the US out of NATO and trying to get his Republican allies to block Ukraine aid.

  9. Trump inherited a good situation from Obama and simply let it ride. All Trump did was cut taxes on the wealthy and run up trillions in debt.

  12. At almost every opportunity Trump put his interests and his petty, myopic worldviews ahead of our national interests — including embracing ruthless (sMaRtz) dictators who knew exactly how to handle him by playing to his ego. Facts: every single non political senior military and international advisor who worked side by side with Trump has deemed him uniquely unfit for office regarding global diplomacy and security. Facts2: quit telling everyone how tough he is when he refused to retaliate against Iran illegally downing one of our most capable (and expensive) military drones, going against all the advisors who had noted Iran’s increased hostilities at the time. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2019_Iranian_shoot-down_of_American_drone

  13. b/c Trump and Putin were trying to corrupt the Ukrainian government, namely Zelensky to try and bring them under heel ala Belarus and other countries. They also thought they had more time b/c they thought Trump was going to win re-election. Incidentally Russia is one of the primary causes for corruption in the Ukrainian government. It's how they operate and what they're trying to do w/ our government. Then Biden won and came in and restored aid to Ukraine against Russia so Russia had no choice but to try and go in w/ force to take out the government before all of the US aid arrived. They thought they could be in and out fast like w/ Crimea. But the Ukrainians stood firm against them and bought enough time for the West to give them more aid. In short, why go in w/ force when they had an ally in the White House withholding aid and helping them pressure the Ukrainian government. What they wanted was a Russian stooge in power anyway like they have in the other governments around them.

  14. "We need proof Trump deregulated so much stuff and cut red tape" the guy literally hated the government getting too involved with the economy. You know why? I'll give you a hint, he was the only non politician business owner to be president. Biden doesn't know shit about running a business, nobody here runs a business. Just a punch of pencil pushers that answers to somebody .

Trump is a convicted rapist. He's on trial now for significant business fraud. He tried to overthrow the government and end democracy on 1/6/21. He faces 91 criminal indictments as a result. Amazing people are willing to overlook this.

  20. Crime is at an all time high, personal debt is at an all time high, people lost their 401ks, people have to work 2 jobs, you can't buy a house interest rates are so high, more overdose deaths with fentanyl flooding our cities because our border is lost, when you have an old weak president there's more foreign conflict, the dollar is worthless. Countries are getting more aid than Hawaii and East Palestine. But hey at least there's no mean tweets I guess. Name what's better now than under Trump.

  21. In your mind the Palestinians have been at war for a long time and have been victimized. You're right. With that said it was not open warfare and what happened was unconscionable because it was horrific to a degree of brutality that warfare doesn't usually match. Or, that once open warfare happens and is underway such atrocities take place and are either not discussed, rarely discussed, or swept under the rug. This was different. How they're being painted is exactly what they did as the opening salvo to war.

  22. I think you & @TF_Titan encapsulated it pretty well. Hold people to some standards, but the 20-30 people regularly in this forum aren't the typical people that need to have everything buttoned up. This little corner of the internet isn't driving misinformation. I'll speak up if I see a 10 year old holding a lit cherry bomb for attention, but if a 25 year old blows his hands off doing the same thing I'm not going to lose sleep for not warning him of the dangers. Think there's more self piety going on here moreso than some actual moral discussion that some are trying to frame it as.

  23. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/oct/22/argentina-javier-milei-presidential-election The guy is as much a wildcard as can be imagined and, interesting to me, the people I know in Argentina all want him in. These are educated people and liberals who have even lived outside Argentina (which certainly has its challenges) for many years. They admit that Argentina has so many challenges that many people, themselves included, just want to explore a different path ... but much of what they discuss as problems for Argentina are perceptions that it's the poor who are lazy and that's the problem, not abuses by those in power. In his words, people have kids, no job and are maybe children of veterans and so they make money and are trained not to work. The problem isn't the chef but the recipe (socialist policies). This guy is a former tantric sex coach, is going to abolish the central bank, do away with pubic health and education and allow people to sell their organs. He has the support of Bolsonaro, among others, and has already decried irregularities in the primary, arguing 2.5-5% of votes weren't counted. And, yes, he's a big fan of Trump.

    GOP thread

Day 20.... Former President Donald Trump appears to be toying with a Republican lawmaker who has ambitions of becoming the next GOP speaker. Punchbowl News' Jake Sherman reports that Rep. Tom Emmer (R-MN) had a phone conversation with Trump on Saturday in the hopes of talking about reported reservations Trump has about letting him become the most powerful man in the House of Representatives. But just two days after the call, reports the Washington Post's Leigh Ann Caldwell, Trump gave his allies the green light to take Emmer down. "Trump has directed his allies to hammer Emmer, according to people close to Trump," she writes on Twitter. "As of last night he was likely to stay out of it. While he might not say anything, he’s asked his allies to." Trump allies early on Monday morning began trash-talking Emmer to Politico's Playbook, with one MAGA Republican telling the publication that Emmer is "openly hostile to Trump." https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/trump-tells-allies-to-hammer-gop-speaker-hopeful-right-after-talking-with-him-report/ar-AA1iIj4Z?ocid=msedgntp&pc=HCTS&cvid=9467e3fe67c8413a84a7450e44e33188&ei=14 This is why there is a problem. Anyone acceptable to Trump isn't going to be acceptable to the few moderates (18) who are from districts also carried by Biden.

  41. Hezbollah, the Lebanese Shia Islamist political party and militant group,[1][2] has an exceptionally strong military wing, thought to be stronger than the Lebanese Army,[3][4] and equivalent to the armed strength of a medium-sized army.[5][a] A hybrid force, the group maintains "robust conventional and unconventional military capabilities",[7] and is generally considered the most powerful non-state actor in the world.[8][9][b][7][11] Estimates vary widely, but as of October 2021, Hezbollah's leader Hassan Nasrallah claimed his organization has 100,000 trained fighters;[12] while in 2017, Jane's assessed Hezbollah's strength at more than 25,000 full-time fighters and approximately 20,000–30,000 reservists. Estimates of Hezbollah's total rocket count range from 40,000[19] to 150,000,[20] which is considerably more than most countries. Sources generally agree that Hezbollah's strength in conventional warfare compares favorably to state militaries in the Arab world.[25][e] A 2009 review concluded that Hezbollah was "a well-trained, well-armed, highly motivated, and highly evolved war-fighting machine"[f] and "the only Arab or Muslim entity to successfully face the Israelis in combat."[18] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hezbollah_armed_strength

  42. If anyone is interested, the most recent episode of the Al Franken Podcast is about this conflict. Boiling it down the guest expert basically lays out how this is largely an intractable problem (Israel/Palestine) and how messy a ground war in Gaza likely is going to be. On the upside he also said that that Hezbollah (the much bigger military threat compared to Hamas) and Iran are unlikely to get involved in a bigger conflict because of the US presence as well as the rest of the world considering it a threat to global stability.

  46. Well with Trump, maybe there wouldn't be as much conflict because he would throw Bibi to the wolves, give Ukraine to Russia, and prostrate himself in subservience before the world's dictators and autocrats like he did before, while selling out the United States of America and its values to the likes of Kim Jung Un, Vladimir Putin, and Xi Xinping all three of which he openly praises and admires.
