 Trump has already said he wants the debate he's already agreed to moved to Fox.

 

He's setting up a potential excuse if that doesn't happen to back out.

 

If he was confident, he wouldn't be doing this.  He'd be asking for more debates.

Part of me wonders if some of the campaign staff that asked for the debate to be so early before the convention was because it gave them a potential out if Biden crashed and burned in just the spectacular fireball that he did.
 

If the debates were all held in the fall, Biden would have been locked in as the nominee and on the ballots for November and it would have been too late to change anything. By doing it early they were able to replace him before the nomination became official.

The more I consider how quick all the important people and alternate candidates fell in line, the more I think the timing could be intentional. It blunts RNC news, yes, but maybe it took this long to get everyone to fall in line behind the scenes.

 

I still lean towards Joe just taking this long to accept the fall in polls couldn't be easily fixed ... but there are good reasons to think this timing and it working out so cleanly so quickly is not a coincidence.

It's a little of both.  Joe needed that time. Nancy gave him a window and timed the window very well. 

 

Then the players united quickly and made that window really effective.

I just do not get the perception of time others have. 

 

The debate was...less than a month ago. He gave up his chance to keep the most powerful position in less than a month. The amount of momentum and coalescing you are seeing is probably just a bunch of people taking this moment in time with incredible seriousness.
