Jonnu Smith is the TE version of "Beast Mode"

I really hope Jonnu becomes an all world TE, I love the guy... but he's not there yet. Every receiving stat you can think of puts him in the 15-30 range statistically for TEs. Even when accounting for MM or extrapolating RTs stats with him over 16 games. He needs a lot more production or become a much bigger part of the O (currently less than 3 targets per game) before anyone could say he has "broken out". Thats an average to good TE with lots of room to improve.

 

We either need to learn to utilize him better, or he needs to do more to get open on his own, or both. He's got the talent and work ethic for it... and he very well could be an absolute stud.  But it's premature. He's a spectacular playmaker when the ball is schemed to him. Now he needs to be one when it isnt.

 

Even Walker in his beat up state and only really playing like 4 games had half the yardage totals of Jonnu.  If he has under 450 yards receiving again, the offseason chatter will be whether he is even re-signed by us. Vrabel loves him.. so that helps... but his production to this point has been replaceable.

FWIW I think we do sign him and I think he steps up his production some.

The problem is that you think the difference between the 40 times is small enough to make the statement that Evans has CJ type speed accurate. He's fast for sure but he does not have CJ type speed. You gotta start dipping down into the low 4.3's for that to be the case and even then most of those guys don't possess CJ's functional speed. I think most of us get the main idea of what you're trying to say though.

Yeah, CJ speed is like a Hennessey Venom and Evans is merely a Z06 Corvette. 

 

Both are fast, but they are not remotely in the same class.

Yeah CJ was on some other shit. It looked like he wasnt really even trying or pressing hard to run at the speed he did almost like he was jogging and still was flying past everyone. Even Tyreek looks like hes running hard to go as fast as he goes but CJ looked like he was gliding down field like he was on ice with skates or some shit.

I heard Wyatt say today that next to Tannehill (who he said has taken complete charge of the offense) Jonnu was the most impressive player he has seen so far at camp.

Agreed. CJ in his prime had Tyreek Hill level speed. Evans is fast but let's not compare him to CJ.

With due respect to previous generations... I regard CJ as the fastest player I’ve ever seen In pads, and one of the very few players whose ridiculous track speed translated directly to on-field performance.   We’ve seen lots of guys who are really, really fast..,,but CI took it to a whole different level. 
 

I imagine the league has seen other guys with similarly transcendent speed....Darrell Green is one name that comes to mind. But I don’t recall ever seeing another player whose sheer velocity made other “fast” players look like they were running in mud.

This cannot be overstated. Guys like Jeff Demos, Marquise Goodwin, etc were much faster than CJ on the track but once they hit the field it was different.

Probably still my favorite run I can remember from any Titan was the one against the Jags where he ran over the LB and then did this strange little side step like ‘oh shit I’m out!’. It was by pure velocity. That LB out weighed him by a solid 35 pounds. 
 

It reminds me of when I played football and we would do hitting drills. My best friend had legit 4.4 speed (ran track in college) and I always hated when I got paired with him even though I was 30 pounds bigger. That speed stings like a motherfucker. I much preferred hitting the fat bastards on the O-line than hitting my guy Johnny because of his pure acceleration.

He got massively overpaid by New England, so I think it was fine to let him go. But he’s had two of his best seasons the last two years (one of which under Art Smith). He’s gotta be the fastest TE in the league, right? And he’s perfect in a Shanahan-esqu offense.
