I do think that the “it’s impossible to tell if he can get open because he is so wide open it looks like they aren’t even trying to guard him” argument is funny.

Randy Moss must've been the most unopen WR of all time then.

Did we really draft Tate or does Jamal need to see him in a jersey first

Long story short, he is an analytical dream. Absoluty elite in   catch rate   contested catch rate   drop rate   yards per route run against both zone and man

With a 86% contested catch rate it doesn't matter if he can get open.

As others have mentioned, a good chunk of those contested catches were underthrows.

As a prospect, he makes a lot of sense for Cam. The biggest struggle we had at reciever last year was bad hands. Tate is a guy who is gonna be at the right place, at the right time, and will catch everything near him. It also allows them to develop Dike as a deep threat on the other side (who I think needs to be the eventual Ridley replacement, not the slot).

You've also gone from having Ayomanor trying to be the #2 as a rookie, to bow being the #5 In year 2. That's dramatically better depth.

If he can't get open and is another Corey Davis, it's a bad pick. But most of the top WRs right now ran slower than Tate at the Combine, so the timed speed is overblown. I didn't love the pick, but it makes sense -- Reese scares me with his bust potential, I didn't want them to waste a pick on a non-premier position, and bo one wanted to trade up, so the perfect option didn't exist.

This has probably been posted but am I the only one who sees some Justin Jefferson in this kid?

Sidenote, the Dodge Ram commercial built into this is hilarious.

I've been completely out of the loop this draft season but this is one of the few guys I actually watched and I really like the pick. I don't think he's very flashy but he's polished, reliable , and wins in different ways. I probably would've leaned towards one of the pass rushers but I like this pick. Boy better like waking up early.

I can see him being a bigger, taller Reggie Wayne (if he pans out). This wasn't a great draft. In most other drafts, I don't think Tate is a top 5 pick, but you can only draft from what is there. I don't love his chances of being an elite WR in the league, but I can see an outcome where he's very very good for a long time. Let's hope for the best. This will be huge for Cam if works out (crosses fingers)

Interesting note, that video shows Tate running a laser timed 1.54 10 yd split. At the combine he ran a 1.61 with what looked like an early stumble.

Loving this pick more and more. The Steve Smith videos of Tate are worth watching.

The problem that I have with his and every other breakdown is that all of the routes were basically uncontested.  I want to see how he fares against coverage that he'll be expected to beat in the NFL.  I don't really care that he can run a slant when no DB is within 15 yards of him.

Aren't you the one who was complaining about Dike being run down in his 2023 highlight reel, worrying he wasn't fast enough?

here we go again. Tate was running routes against air! Teams thought he sucked so bad they didn't even try to cover him!
