Which may sound crazy because those are amazing plays. Obviously if he can do that at the NFL level then he'll be outstanding. It's just the DB talent in the NFL is so elite, and he was getting the second best guy in all his matchups. Justafan Posted April 27 Report Share Posted April 27 (edited) The concern isn't that Tate can't run routes. He clearly runs routes and his footwork is very detailed. The main concern is that he hasn't had to do it the way he'll have to do it at the pro level. Most of his snaps came from the Z or the slot, meaning he didn't match up against a lot of physical in your face guys that press you at the LOS. That doesn't mean he can't do it, it just means we don't really know. One thing Lombardi talked about that I really like is that he does a great job of attacking a corner's blind spot. If you give Tate a free release against zone, you've already lost because he does a great job of finding the soft spot. If you line up man, you better have a guy who can mirror and has the length and physicality to bump him off his route or break it up at the high point. Shorter and less physical corners will likely struggle to match up with him. My fear is when a team has a strong physical press man corner that he won't have the play strength or the speed to truly make the other team pay for that. Still, that means Ridley is now lining up against a #2 and not facing press. Wandale has enough juice to still move the ball. Hopefully the oline and run game are improved. Hopefully Ward takes a step forward in year two. Just having him on the field will hopefully open things up for other guys. A lot of hopes but I can absolutely see the potential of the offense and so I don't want people to think I'm just poo pooing on Tate to be a hater. I just think it's dumb to sit here and lick his balls all offseason and not discuss some of the potential flaws of our top pick. That doesn't mean I'm not rooting as hard as anyone for him to be the next De'Andre Hopkins. I 100% am. But they won't. Ever. He's going to have to beat press coverage and separate vs man, and exactly how often did he show he could do that in college? I'd wager no more often than WRs drafted long after him. Maybe he's just so good that he makes everything look easy. FireInTheHole Posted April 27 Report Share Posted April 27 I initially had concerns about Tate as well. However, the more I watch, the more I’m impressed with him. The cool thing too is in doing research, you get hyper-focused and sometimes forget how great he is at certain things. I was watching for speed/YAC concerns, and while doing that I kept noticing him pluck balls out of the air and his excellent contested catch rate, and fell more into liking him. He is going to do wonders with Cam and in the offense. He doesn’t even really need to be a bonafide alpha WR1 type. Cam is going to distribute the ball and find who is open, and Ridley and Robinson (and even Dike) have the juice to make teams pay.
