I don't see particularly good route running, I don't see great yac, and I know he was not getting the best CB each week.

I'm not saying he won't be good, but looking at just a handful of plays from Malik Nabers as an example I see a special player with his route running, body control, and change of direction. Definitely hoping for the best, and definitely think he's an upgrade from what we have which is what matters most

If he can have comparable production to DeVonta Smith, then I'll consider it a successful pick.  Not ideal, but consistency at WR is a huge need, especially for Ward.

They added some guys later who I feel confident will contribute, so I am not hinging as much on this pick as I normally would for a WR taken at #4 .

Did we really draft Tate or does Jamal need to see him in a jersey first

Long story short, he is an analytical dream. Absoluty elite in   catch rate   contested catch rate   drop rate   yards per route run against both zone and man

Devonta Smith is his floor, and he's 15 to 20 pounds heavier with better hands and contested catch rate. He's a good prospect. He isn't an elite one, but he's a good one and in this draft was easily a top 10 prospect.

The offense was missing firepower big time last year. I think the pick would have been Love, but I don't think you go defense here bc they desperately need impact on offense.

While good fits for late round picks at WR, the rookies from last year are not who you go into this year with and expect to have a leap in offensive effectiveness and output along with a solid but unimpressive and aging Tony Pollard. You have to get the most impactful offensive skill player available if you want to avoid a dreadful season with another 500 yard leading receiver,  because a repeat of that output equals another year of 4 or less wins.

My question is whether Tate really was the best offensive skill player in the draft after  Love. I don't follow college football so I have no clue but I sure hope the answer is yes.

I was good with the pick when it happened.  Felt even better about it when KC let it slip they were targeting him.  Nothings for sure, but clearly front offices were a lot higher on him than casual pundits and fans.

Smith had nearly 1,900 yards and 23 TDs in the SEC.  He was the WR1 and focal point of secondaries, and he was absolutely dominant.  While Tate mostly stacked production against bad teams who didn't make that much of an effort to stop him.

There were 10 WRs last year who gained 1,100+ yards, and most were on bad teams.  Having such production on a competitive team while NFL defenses do their best to stop you is far more difficult than people make it out to be.  Those guys are as rare as good QBs.  Putting Tate in this category when he never was this guy in college and lacks dominant physical traits is a bit premature.

All fair, but lacks a lot of context. Tate will be the better receiver in the NFL because his playing weight will be around 200 pounds versus Smith at 175. He has better hands as well. You put Tate in that Alabama offense getting 150 targets and they put up similar numbers. I'm not sure what you don't get about that. Switch Smith with Tate at OSU and he's #2 as well.

Smith is significantly more athletic than Tate.  Which leads to more separation and the ability to beat press coverage vs. NFL CBs.  Two things which are huge question marks for Tate

Huh? That's like the second thing he's most known for after the ball skills

Someone posted a video that he wasn't a good route runner yesterday and now you have people parroting it today.
