No idea where this nugget fits so thought it might worth starting a thread for all Titans non HC offseason discussion.   This was meant to happen last offseason but Sweat never showed up so

Who will we draft? The answer has been there the whole time.

That’s a lot of hooch

That’s because he wasn’t. He was recruited as a two star RB. It takes 10 seconds to look up his RB stats in college.

He was heavily recruited by basically everyone as a wr/cb and went to ecu because they were like the only school that let him play rb. Somewhat similar to Henry's story.

It's been nearly 20 years now and the internet blows now... but I could've sworn he said he had 6-7 games at WR or at least, early on, ran in practice with the WRs as much as RBs for 6-7 weeks even though he went to ECU as a RB.

So I'll give you credit for remembering better and I'll eat crow for misremembering it to be a full position switch.

I think we end up bringing Zeitler back

Don't they sometimes sign vets late to give them a break from camps?   Once Zeitler agreed to play another year  and we hadn't heard anything about him being resigned-  that's where my head went.

CJ had several catches lined up wide. There was another where he beats press off the line and the shitty QB at the time threw a ball that he had to lay out and dive for. Just like a 15-20 yard catch but it was a full on parallel to the ground dive.

Those QBs were terrible.

CJ was mostly only asked to do certain things, like turn around in the middle of the field with a LB an inch away.

Johnson didn't catch enough swing passes IMO.

Yep. Should have been a staple of the offense. Remember the one in the first quarter in the playoffs to Baltimore? He has the DB doing his deer in the headlights impression.

Are swing passes considered a valid contribution to the passing game for a RB?

If CJ caught too many swing passes, they probably don't count.

especially if he took 4-5 for 70 yard TDs. Those would especially not count for... reasons.

worst thing ever!

lol. CJ was a great between the tackles runner until he got paid and laid down.

still the dumbest argument ever made on this board.

:CJ got paid and doesn't care!
-well he rushed like 32 times for 200 yards last week.
:yeah against the bengals!
-so he cares

:no! he has to do it against a top 5 defense without a QB or OL and a terrible OC being predictable!
-so you think he's afraid against good teams and stat grabbing against bad ones?
:yes dummy!
-so he cares... just sometimes... randomly?

:no! Yes.. no lol. You don't get it!

- the guy that talks about wanting to be in the HOF and played injured like every week without missing games and being our bellcow is afraid of playing?
:yes! Duh!!

- are you sure that you aren't just pissed off they paid a RB big money?
:yes that too!

dumbest shit ever.

these EXACT same people said almost the EXACT same things about Henry... and it's the same people that want to make up silly battles pitting HOF level RBs vs playoff choking QBs in a hypothetical battle where no one can agree on rules.

it's simple. They don't like paying RBs and will irrationally bash every one on our team when that happens.

No, what's being said, even if I disagree with the framing in some ways, is that CJ was not a reliable receiver out of the backfield you could count on for 6-8 targets and 4 to 5 catches a game, and he never took over a game from that aspect. He could break big plays for sure, best game breaker in history in my opinion, but he was limited there because of the scheme and the fact they never bothered with coaching him up to run a full route tree and be implemented in the passing game.

Like Scine said, those swing passes should have been featured every game. In breakers, Texas routes, out routes, seam routes...all things we see from other backs capable of taking over a game in the passing game. We saw none of it. The most we saw was where they'd run a decoy 9 route from the outside that worked a couple times. That was the extent of what they asked him to do, which as I noted in my first post on the topic was stupid.

Some of Johnson's big plays out of the backfield were on broken plays.  Two plays come to mind, both in 2013 and both long TDs, one against KC and one against SF, both plays that the QB basically made a desperation throw to him after the play broke down and he scored.  He should've been featured as a pass catcher like Marshall Faulk was.  He had that kind of talent.  Running him between the tackles as much as they did was both a waste and shortened his effectiveness and career.

Exactly. I wasn’t even bashing CJ. Loved me some CJ2K and I advocated for drafting Henry when the same people who get mad at every criticism of him we’re also the same people who complained he had no lateral agility even after I posted about a billion videos of him showing off his lateral agility. It was a running joke on the board for years.

Oh yeah haha I remember that saga. Pretty much my history with this place is rife with intense discussions of the RB position. We still haven't got it quite figured out yet and in the year of our Lord, 2026, are right back to it!

1) what does "taking over a game" mean exactly?

2) Who are these "other backs"?  Is it pretty common for non-CJ backs to do these things and "take over a game"?

Being able to handle a massive target share in any specific game over a season and it happens multiple times a season.

Bijan, Saquan, and McCaffery are those RBs right now.
