Initial Thoughts on the Titans Draft

Assuming they don't trade back in, have to say it looks to be pretty damn solid given the capital they entered with once they decided to stick and pick at 1.

 

Ward will start immediately and at worst should be a massive upgrade over Levis and Rudolph and ideally is the franchise QB for the next decade or so.  Oladejo is immediately in the edge rotation.  Winston will be competing with Woods to start and could be a steal since he missed most of last year.  The WR's at worst at competition to the room and Dike can also return punts.  Helm should compete to start or play a ton of snaps right away.  The Guard can be the interior swing guy and starter in 2026.  The CB seems to be a good value pick there with some ball skills and the RB adds a power back with some ST abilities to the back end of the roster.

 

Ward likely makes or breaks the draft long term but it seems like this was a good meat and potatoes draft adding a bunch of good locker room guys who love the game to the mix.

At this point, I only try to look at the logic and reasoning behind the picks. We don't know how these players are going to turn out until they play. That's why I hate draft grades. The only pick I'm feeling initially a little iffy about is Dike, but I get that they wanted speed at WR. Ward obviously will start day 1. Femi probably a sub package guy in year 1 who hopefully becomes a good starter in year 2. I give Winston and Ayomanor outside chances of starting some point in year 1. I don't think Woods or Van Jefferson are locks to keep their jobs if the rookies impress.

Plan and value wise, I think they did pretty well on the surface.  Based on the info they did share, I do think some players that the draft media had on big boards were off the Titans board - Green and Burden come to mind.  

 

Even with the traits guys they picked, it seems like the floor is reasonably high, something prior regimes routinely missed in the evaluations.

I won't speculate on the players drafted.  But I'm surprised they didn't take an OT.  Jaelyn Duncan is the swing guy.

 

In addition, in a deep DL class, they didn't add anyone.  T K McClendon, who was injured all last year is the 5th guy, unless you count D. Jones.

It was a really solid draft. I didn’t realize how deep the receiver class was. Still wish they would’ve drafted a more explosive ready to play edge and a developmental tackle. There’s still time.

 

Incredible utilization of draft cap. Ranio kinda fucked us.

I’m sure they wanted to but the board fell how it fell and maybe they didn’t feel the value was right.

That #1 spot on the waiver wire will be utilized heavily!

I bitched about the character guys, but this is a rebuild. This year is a lot less important than year 2-3 which is where those dividends start paying off.

 Vets don't hit the wire, so it would have to be somone who isn't vested.

I think the board was such where there wasn't a LT worthy guy day 2 or 3.  Seemed like they were all RT types.  They did sign some guys a week or 2 ago that seemed like swing T options and Fant is still out there,

I think we will still sign a couple of free agents, especially at DE. Smith is probably the only one worth signing out there though.

I think they might have picked a DL but the well dried up a ton after round 3.

All that matters for 2025 is Ward's progression.

The other Texas OT was sitting there forever.  I was hoping they'd take a swing.  The fact that the eagles took the shot has me wondering if we missed out considering their ability to find oline recently.
