Trying to make a judgement on Ward after a disastrous rookie season and a few preseason drives is ridiculous.  People need to slow down trying to determine whether or not Ward is a franchise QB or a b

It's far too early to determine where he'll land.  All of what you point out is valid.  He was in an awful situation surrounded by poor talent and coaching.  This year, there's no question that on pap

I'm perfectly happy sitting in the patience and excuse making camp this early for a guy who's driven like him a who flashes brilliance like him.   This isn't the case where it's everyone els

It might take 5 seasons, that's just the reality.

If it takes 5 years, the ROI will be with some other team.

2027 is the key year as year 4 is when you either are looking to extend a guy or kick the can with a 5th year option.

There should be some improvement this year as with most 2nd year starters but by year 3 it should be clear what he is - assuming he stays healthy of course.

Timeline is accelerated in terms of high drafted qb.  There are rumors that MIN is going to dump McCarthy .

It’s easier than ever to play qb now so if you have it , it shows pretty quickly .

Which is why it’s a bad sign if he doesn’t show significant progress /improvement at some point in year 2.

Probably some other team yes. Meanwhile the Titan's would probably be year 2 into some other QB likely not hitting the rare jackpot of early accelerated development and probably restarting the same cycle again.

It is what it is. You can't wait around forever but he could make it well worth your while if you almost do.

Its like people forget the progression we saw last year. That why I'm still optimistic with a real OC and staff, he'll be worth the pick.

First Half (Weeks 1–9)

Completion Rate: 57.6% (170 of 295)

Passing Yards: 1,760 yards

Touchdowns & Interceptions: 5 touchdowns and 6 interceptions

Passer Rating: 72.1

Pocket Issues: Suffered from a league-high pressure-to-sack rate of nearly 29%

Second Half (Weeks 10–18)

Completion Rate: 62.4% (153 of 245)

Passing Yards: 1,409 yards

Touchdowns & Interceptions: 10 touchdowns and 1 interception

Passer Rating: 90.0

That's the narrative, but how true is it? Even guys who come in good are regressing year 2 and 3 nowadays. I think defenses are catching up the rule changes of a decade plus ago.

Thing may go back to the old school, when you had a guy and let him develop. And even when you have a guy you draft another early and let him develop a few years before seeing action. QBs given up to quickly and doing well at other teams is only going to happen so often before things change.

Baker Mayfield, Geno Smith, Daniel Jones, Goff, and now a super bowl winner in Sam Darnold. Jared Goff.

Kyler Murray and Malik Willis could be next.

Maybe stop expecting guys to come in and be great immediately, protect your organization and don't put all your eggs and your career in the hands of a rookie QB's success

Ideally you'd like him to build off the last part of 2025 but even these stats are a bit inflated.

  • They scored 2 TD's (1 passing) versus SEA in the last 2 minutes (it was 30-10 at the 2 minute warning and the only TD to that point was a Dike punt return.
  • Ward had 2 TD passes vs CLE but was 12-26 for 98 yards for the rest of the game and they won largely because of the run game and turnovers and a key punt block.
  • 2 TD's (1 passing) in the 4th vs SF down 21 and 17 points

QBR reflects this as well.  In the 8 games after the bye, he had QBR's under 40 in 4 games (50%).  The highest QBR game was finale when he played only the 1 series before getting hurt.

In a glass half full mode, I fully expect Daboll to run the offense in a similar manner to what McCoy was doing - establish the run, emphasize more play action and simpler read pass designs - at least until Ward can master that stuff before expanding out things.  But this also will require the defense holding up their end of the bargain and playing complementary ball.  The offense will likely implode if they have to play constantly from behind.

The contracts made the old school way impossible unless teams stop overdrafting QB's, which they've shown zero desire to do.  You need to know by the start of year 4 or you get into the Kyler/Lawrence/Jones/Tua situations where the market price for a vet QB is the massive overpay, that's arguably worse than overdrafting a guy on the rookie deals.

On top of it, none of these guys you mentioned would be considered elite/top tier QB's.  The lesson teams should be taking is that the idea that you better build a team around them.  Only Goff and Darnold have winning playoff records and in SEA's case they had the best balance of offense, defense, and special teams play of anyone last season.

It's def not easier to play QB these days. Defenses have really passed the offense in terms of defending the passing games. I recently heard a podcast(The Athletic?) that went into detail. Defenses have went away from the single high and went all out against preventing explosive plays. They play way more hybrid zones, inverted zones and usually don't get into their true coverage until after the ball is snapped. They also have defenders follow WRs in motion(a man coverage tell) but drop into zone.

The last 3 or 4 years it's been way more a team/defensive that won the SB vs the elite QB. Darnold played well but it was nothing great. He had like 25 TDs 14 INTs, in the SB he had 200 yards and a passer rating in the 70s. The year before Hurts had like 18 TDs, and barely cracked 200 yards in the SB and KC beat the Eagles throwing for 180 yards.....

The Titans need to try and build a dominant defense and OL and play complimentary football. Seattle, the Eagles and KC won the last 3 SBs this way. Develop Ward along the way

Brady, Manning, Brees are gone and Stafford is about done.

Look around the league at the QBs starting and doing well and their journey and there is one thing that's clear about these #1 picks(or highly drafted) QBs. The teams fail the QBs so often. Baker Mayfield, Trevor Lawernce(both #1 picks) and Sam Darnold. They were on dysfunctional teams set up for failure and eventually got into better situations and suddenly could play. The Browns, Jags and Jets were terrible situations. Even guys like Allen and Stafford had serious questions and struggles their first 3 to 4 years.

No QB would have done well last year in the situation Ward was in. Inept coaching staff, terrible pass blocking OL and pitiful weapons. All things like Mayfield and Darnold had against them early in their careers. Last year was not like 2019 with Mariota and the offensive problems were all on the QB.

Ward has the tools, talent and a great work ethic. He has correctable issues and needs experience. All Cam Ward needs is the game to slow down, which comes with more playing time. He also needs a good offensive supporting cast(including coaching/play calling) and especially quality pass protection. He's not going to play like the #1 pick should this season. We're early in the process and it's going to take time, like it did with many of the other QBs mentioned.

Say it louder for those in the back. Excellent post.
