He’s not going to be Dexter Lawrence, but he optimally brings something that no other player can bring. They clearly were intent on drafting him based on their meeting with him after the DUI.

What can no other player bring? He has to be a pass rushing 3 down nose which is what dexter is. If he is just a 2 down nose tackle we could have got that in the 6th-udfa. We did it 3 times in a row lol

Yeah , the pass rushing ability is what got him drafted high.  If he doesn’t do that with us, it’s a waste since you can get run stuffers/space eaters later on as you said.

They believe Sweat can be a pass rusher and he showed he could do that well in college.

His snap count was the most of any DT in this draft by 60. His pass rush grades were pretty stellar and was the only player to grade out over 85 on pass rush and run with the highest of anyone on rush D. I think he was above 90 graded on both according to this article :

"When he was on the field, Sweat was extremely productive last season at Texas. He graded above 90.0 as both a run defender and a pass-rusher, finishing first among all FBS defensive tackles in PFF’s Wins Above Average metric."

That said, felt like a good chance we could have got him if we dropped back but there was a DT run. Wasn't it on BWTB where Ran was open enough to admit he had the trade offer and didnt take it?  So I assume when he also said another team called him and said they were going to get Sweat, that I believe him there too.

This defense is going to look different. It feels a lot like we are wanting to use sweat as a 3 down player... and our 3rd down defense likely won't be typical of modern pass rush lines. It feels a ton like we will be doing that early 2000s Ravens method where we have big boys absorbing blockers up the middle and occasionally pass rushing, while bringing the blitzes from everywhere.

In that regard he can be a weapon however we use him. If he controls his hedonisms and follows Latham around in the weight room, he has the ability to be a special player.

His final year at Texas has never been in question.

He has a laundry list of question marks though, none of them are out right terrifying but they add up to a questionable investment especially when you figure in the potential trade.

The snap count argument is a bit lame because it lacks context. He played a ton of snaps sure but he was gassed a lot of the time. He still did make use of those snaps though because in College even with no push he was almost impossible to move at his size. He also is good at batting passes which he took advantage of on those "rest" snaps.

And just to be fair I have heard on a few raido/podcasts recently that he only had 1 year of production at Texas which isn't true. He wasn't dominate his 2022 season but he was good. People just looked at his box scores and saw he had about the same sacks and tackles for a loss his first 4 years as his final season it seems like.

The optimistic view is that he is huge and yet still athletic with an ability to demand (and beat) double teams on any down. And if he can do that then it should make life easier for Simmons, Landry, Murray, and everyone else in the front 7.

If he was just big then they wouldn’t have been interested in him on day 2.

I know that, but he was hardly a bull in a China shop in college. He was oddly a 380 pound finesse player. Kinda like the Derrick Henry of nose tackles.

If he can keep it all together I have no doubt he can be good. Will he be 2 2nd round picks and a solid NT you could have got for peanuts good is the question.
