Here's when we knew this would happen:

There are plenty of guys who want to be HC that could care less if the staff is already hired.  The guys out there now aren't going to be that picky.

Not to mention they might end up with a better candidate anyway.  Hiring these guys is a crap shoot.

They have more worry with Luck and his injury and really need to resolve something before the draft if they can.  Unless I'm 100% sure Luck will be back I use my 1st round pick on one of the QBs to groom.  Worst scenario is you can trade one of your QBs in a year or two. to get some value back

Exactly. The guys left aren’t going to be picky because their shittier candidates though. Hell, I’ll take the job and don’t mind if my assistants are already hired.  Nah, fuck the colts.

There’s no way to spin any positives on this imo.  If they get a great coach in the end, it’s just sheer luck and nothing else.

Someone told me this isn’t a big deal, though. It’s totally commonplace.

It isn’t a big deal in that they will just have to find a different coach and move on. But it’s almost unheard of for a coach to back out of getting a head coaching job.

I haven't read all 22 pages yet but I am wondering this.

Perhaps the whole thing was planned by BB and McDaniels from the start.  These guys probably don't like the Colts because of the rivalry during the Peyton Manning years.  They also probably wouldn't want to see a top offensive mind going there to mentor Luck.

So they devise a plan where McDaniels flirts with the Colts just long enough for them to miss out on hiring some of the other head coaching candidates.  Then McDaniels backs out of a deal he was never going to sign in the first place.

The two of them are probably sitting next to Ernie Adams laughing their asses off right now.

Wasn’t it Oman saying Robinson leaked all of the McDaniels info?

I believe Robinson was the leaker in terms of Mularkey's job was still not safe......

Obviously most of us/media believed the target was McDainels

Yup. That article is crap.

Are you being serious? Or joking? The article is quoting Weis. The guy is IN coaching circles, and he says this doesn't happen...not like this went down. I'll trust his words on it.

I don't think it was planned but I also don't think it was lost on Kraft & BB who they'd be screwing when they were talking McDaniels into coming back.

They hate the Colts over Deflategate.

I wonder how many times in their franchise’s history the Colts have released a player who is under contract and who they had promised would make the team. Then didn’t. Then he had to uproot his family. Welcome to the life of one of your players @Colts.

The only way McDaniels isn't a snake of epic proportions here is if they lied to him about Luck and he found out.  I can't think of a single other scenario where this makes sense and he doesn't look like trash.

I was incredibly skeptical of bringing him here and the only reason I would have been ok with it is if that was Jrob's guy.  Now that we know what we know, I for one am grateful Jrob went in another direction and I truly believe it would have been an epic failure had he come here.  Stuff like that makes me think he hasn't changed a bit from his time in Denver no matter how many fluff pieces have been put out about him.

He's been an absolute failure outside of Tom Brady too.  Here's a clue, good QB's make good OCs, not the other way around.
