Ridley is likely gone next year and I dont think you ever turn down a generational level WR.

Ridley won't be here next year, Ayomanor may wind up as trade fodder, Dike still has a lot left to prove, and WanDale Robinson's body could chose to give up on him again.

 

Tate is a massive step toward getting the receiver room to a respectable level, but there's a long road ahead.

This is the profile I made on Tate some time back. I really like this pick.... as I said below, he was ranked #4 on my board which only consisted of consisted of 17 guys with first round grades (KC Concepcion was the only other receiver I thought was a  1st round receiver). It was Reese, Love, or Tate for me.

Overview: Carnell Tate hit the scene in Columbus, Ohio as a 5 Star WR prospect out of WR. From day one, coaches raved about his mental approach and attention to detail and he earned significant playing time as a true freshman in a WR room that included Marvin Harrison Jr and Emeka Egbuka. Considered a lockeroom leader that is mature beyond his age, Tate was able to garner respect as "1A and 1B" next to Jeremiah Smith (who many consider one of the greatest receiver prospects ever).

 

 

AREA OF STRENGTH:

 

- Him and Makai are the most reliable hand catchers in this draft; strong hands and great concentration 

 

-Great at high pointing the ball. Looks longer and taller on film because hes great at using his length and showing extension in contested and jump balls situations.

 

- Great route runner. Really savy with stemming routes to gain subtle leverage. Stacks subtle moves together to create separation.

 

- Runs pretty much every intermediate and deep route comfortably. Full route tree receiver.

 

- Great spatial awareness and knows how to attack angles and force DBs into poor positions. 

 

- Incredible body control. Great sideline catcher. Great feet. Honestly, the tape of a receiver that you show young receivers.

 

 Reliable target in the endzone. Adjusts and tracks off target balls. Great range and radius.

 

He's a high floor receiver. At worst he has 6-7 years as an NFL starter. One of the safest receiver prospects I've seen. Virtually no major weakness.

 

- Earned field time as a freshman in a loaded WR room. Improved every year.

 

- Gives great effort in run blocking

 

- Mature and has overcome real life hardship.

 

- Three years of high level playing experience and will be only 21 through his entire rookie season.

 

AREA OF IMPROVEMENT:

 

- Well documented "tell" at top of breaks (raises his shoulders).

 

- A glider who gets faster with deeper routes. Not a burner in short routes.

 

- Not a lot of proof of concept with yards after catch ability. Doesn't seem to have a lot of wiggle.

 

- Not used in a diverse assortment of wideout positions. Maintained the same role for the last two seasons. 

 

- Really didn't see him having to face the press much-- teams more often opted to put hands on #4 (Smith). He will likely have to adjust to more physicality especially as a developing #1 receiver.

 

- Missed three games with injury last season. 

 

- Wiry frame. Had three years at Ohio State with its S&C program so the likely assumption is that's he's near maxed out on his frame.

Titans Fit: I would imagine Tate ranks pretty highly on most teams boards because hes an easy evaluation. It is easy to to envision how he fits into a role. There really is no bad tape on Tate and he does so many things effortlessly and well. Amani Cooper was another receiver like that. For Tennessee i think he can fit in as an X or Z. People have marked him as a traditional Z only, but he is too advanced as a route runner to not think he can be a true #1 X receiver. I think the major adjustment for him will be physicality in the NFL and having to deal with coverages tailored to stop him. He did not really get that opportunity in college as he was always on the field with two other future NFL starting receivers, at any point.

 

Certainly a day one contributor and likely starter. He brings the right mentality and approach as well. I bet he's higher on NFL team's boards than what the general public suspects. Hes a top five or six guy for me and easily the best receiver in this draft.

 

For Ward, he'd be a sure handed receiver and along with Ayomanor a true endzone contested catch threat. He will allow Ward to to improve on timing routes and get the ball off on time because he so nuanced in his route running and easily gains separation.

I legitimately think he was in the top 5 of every team's board. The people who think we reached for him, really will struggle to explain how why getting him as 6 instead of 4 is so much better, because I really believe his floor was at 6 (i think New York would have traded up to get him).

 

The problem is many here and on the internet just never really discussed him as a premiere prospect in this draft despite it being obvious that every team in the league did

Omar Cooper is rough from the technical aspect of the position. He's going to struggle to get consistent time on the field his first year in my estimation. He's got to refine some of the quick breaks in his route running

The thing I don't understand about him going to the Jets is they needed more of a Tate/Boston type player, not another Garrett Wilson type, and that's what Cooper reminds me of. A lesser Wilson.

 

Of course, the Jets are gonna be Jets. They draft Sadiq after drafting Taylor last year. They don't have any rhyme or reason to their moves, they're just blindly throwing darts in a room full of balloons.
