Still playing the he went against the scrubs while smith was covered by the top 3 cbs and both safties narrative that is completely made up? He played more snaps against teams number 1 cb than smith did. But once he gets into the secondary, it is as if they just let him do whatever he wants. You can see Delane play off of Concepcion here, but they are clearly make a concerted effort to keep him in check. I just don't see that from Tate - where he's winning routes despite the Ds best effort to stop him. In fact, there is often terrible effort or none at all. Not saying he can't do it (he's more athletic than I realized upon watching all his targets). But I've also not seen the evidence to prove that he can. That doesn't mean we have to exaggerate the guy before he takes an NFL snap. He absolutely has to prove he'll be able to beat the press at the NFL level. Pretending that what is clearly obvious isn't true doesn't help or bolster the guy now that he's been drafted. It's just a false narrative. I don't know where you get this claim that he was facing the #1 corner, but Oregon, Penn State, and Michigan all had their #1 CB on Smith, along with safety help, so Tate faced single coverage against the #2. His efficiency wouldn't be possible if he were playing a grind-it-out battle against top-tier CBs every week. 12+ Adot is only possible when you're finding soft spots in zone or beating single-man coverage. He got free looks because he was playing Z while Smith played split end on the line. CBs didn't back off because it was suicide; they backed off because of how the game is played. Please point out the games where teams put a #1 CB on Tate and a #2 on Smith, and then maybe we can talk, but I went back and watched a bunch of Tate, and I don't remember ever seeing that. Where are you seeing that information? Not that I doubt it, but have been thinking about how teams were defending OSU. Meanwhile, AJ Harris shadowed Jeremiah Smith. In the Michigan game, Tate beat Zeke Berry on the 42-yard deep shot - a safety, while Will Johnson (their #1 CB) faced.... You got it, Jeremiah Smith in a bracket. If Tate was always covered by the #1, surely you can point out the plays where he clearly beat the #1 corner on a big play.
