Can I go ahead and start my complaining about the Raiders taking the whole clock to pick a player everyone knows they’re taking who isn’t even in the building?

"I can do anything I put my mind to...   I just can't reach the top shelf." ---Reuben Bain

Tonight's draft is #6.

1. Draft = A Preliminary Version of Writing

A first or unfinished version of something written.

When a government requires eligible citizens to serve in the armed forces.

Examples:

How it applies to regular people:
Usually only relevant if a country has active conscription laws.

Example:
“He worried he might be called in the draft.”

3. Draft = Air Current / Breeze

A flow of air indoors, usually unwanted.

Examples:

Cold draft under a door

Window draft in winter

How it applies to regular people:
Very common in homes.

Example:
“There’s a draft coming from that window.”

4. Draft = Pulling / Drawing Something

From the verb “to draw” or pull.

Used more in technical settings.

Examples:

A chimney drafts smoke upward

Animals drafted to pull wagons (older usage)

How it applies to regular people:
Less common, but you may hear “the fireplace drafts well.”

5. Draft = Bank Payment Instrument

A written order to pay money, similar to a check.

Examples:

Bank draft

Demand draft

Sight draft

How it applies to regular people:
Used in large purchases or secure payments.

Example:
“He paid for the car with a bank draft.”

6. Draft = Selection / Recruiting System

“I’ll have a draft lager.”

8. Draft = Architectural / Technical Drawing

A measured plan or design drawing.

Examples:

House draft plans

Mechanical draft

How it applies to regular people:
Relevant when building/remodeling.

“The contractor showed us a draft of the new kitchen.”

9. Draft = Depth of Water Needed by a Boat

How deep a vessel sits below the waterline.

Examples:

10. Draft = Being Chosen or Pulled Into Something

Sometimes used informally.

Examples:

“I got drafted to help move furniture.”

“They drafted me onto the committee.”

How it applies to regular people:
Very common informal speech.

For most people, “draft” usually means:

Unfinished writing

Air coming through a gap

Military conscription (when in news/history)

Sports/fantasy selection process

Beer on tap

Easy Rule of Thumb

If someone says “draft” with no context:

In a house = air

In writing = first version

In war/history = conscription

In sports = player selection

In a bar = tap beer

Interesting Note

All meanings trace back to the older sense of drawing/pulling:

draw air

draw beer from cask

draw up a document

draw people into service

draw names for teams
