Imagine paying someone to build a house for you. They pull their back and can't finish it...oh well too bad. Still owe the money! Or how bout this? Turns out he only built doll houses before this project, and when it came to building livable homes, he couldn't cut it. Still gotta pay!

Why do these players DESERVE a fully guaranteed contract? They're unproven gambles. I feel differently about vets because they've proven the ability to perform.

It's a tough analogy because the NFL owner is going to make a wild amount of money regardless.

It probably wouldn't be that big a difference if making money as a housing developer was restricted to 32 people and builders were an extremely limited and highly sort after skill, and there was an active market in the 32 developers trying to find new skilled builders or competing for signing on existing proven ones. Then the builders could probably push for stuff like guaranteed contracts.

It's always a bad year to get a QB in free agency.....

So Ryan Stonehouse just signed with Miami… to play for ST coordinator Craig AUKERMAN that almost ended his career! Good luck Stoney! 😳

Builder analogy aside. This is THEIR league. Not the players' league. They signed up for this when they agreed to enter draft, THEIR draft.

Be that as it may, things like this don't really get stopped on philosophical grounds alone. I don't know why the Texans decided to get the ball rolling on giving Higgins a guaranteed contract exactly, but they probably didn't do it because they have the opinion that players should be given guaranteed contracts as a matter of principle, so equally I don't think being philosophically opposed to the idea is going to stop it outright either.

The fact it was a measly 2nd round contract for a guy they probably had a 1st round grade on probably played a part. I'm sure they'll be opposed to giving Stroud a fully guaranteed mega deal when the time comes, due to that being a much larger commitment.

The funny thing is, the league employs all sorts of measures to try and stifle true free markets for players that would probably lead to competitions for players that result in many more guaranteed contracts, as a means to win signings. So while they obviously don't want to have to do stuff like this, I think when it comes down to it, they know that would be the result if the system wasn't so tightly controlled. It's a concession to be made when needed and it will likely continue to be more so going forward, regardless of the philosophical opposition to the idea.

And also, it is just about the raw money and profits. A league of guaranteed contracts could also be a league of lower salary caps, owners still basically control the market. Every so often the NFLPA needs appeasing but it's never for a radical amount.

I'm just arguing against it for rookies. They came up with the new rules to make the contracts reasonable across the board, for players and owners. Allowing this bullshit to creep down the rounds is contrary to the intention of the rules for rookie contracts to be standardized by round.

According to The Atheltic’s Andrew Marchand, ESPN and the NFL are “inside the five-yard line” in their ongoing negotiations, which would see the Worldwide Leader acquire a significant portion of NFL Media. While the details of the potential deal that was first reported on in January 2024 have yet to be finalized, Marchand notes that it could see ESPN acquire properties including the NFL Network, Red Zone Channel and the seven regular-season NFL games that currently air on the league-owned network.

Plenty can still change as nothing has been finalized, but Marchand added that talks have advanced to the point that the league has informed its owners that they may need to vote on a deal early next month, which Sports Business Journal also reported last week. At this point, it’s unclear how much money or equity would be exchanged in the deal, although recent reports have valued NFL Media at approximately $2 billion.

Been going this way for a while with the not so subtle partnership of NFL Network and ESPN the past couple of years
