The only thing that makes me nervous is that I think enthusiasm is down across both aisles, which plays into Trump's advantage and there is just a percentage of the population that will vote only to piss off liberals without even understanding the real ramifications. I think you're right, though; the polls have already started to swing. I personally know several lifelong Republicans who promised me they would march on Washington if Trump were reelected.

As long as a majority of the public views the economy being in good shape (or doing well), then Biden should be able to easily win re-election.

 

If the economy sputters come November, Trump will have his opening.

It’s not that the economy is doing well, it’s the lower portion of the economy is not.  And that’s been that way since people started moving back to the cities versus the rural areas.  
 

The little towns, there’s no economy there any more to support their lifestyle.  People are moving to the cities because that’s where they can make good money.  That’s decimating the little towns, but they don’t know why.  Insert Trump, who claims it’s the bad guys causing the problems and he’ll make it all better.  Even though he didn’t.  Doesn’t matter, he speaks to them.

Not enough to win In my opinion. Most of the people affected by that were going to vote republican no matter what. Maybe you’re right though, I’m certainly no expert.

Inflation will be a bigger deal than GDP in general, but a recession will make things difficult for Biden

This also creates the ‘real America’ optics that the repubs love to tout — look at all the red counties!!  As if open land was somehow voting for president.

In a recent conversation,  a staunchly conservative coworker of mine made a comment about the economy being in terrible shape thanks to Biden.

 

I said, "Terrible economy?   What are you talking about?   The stock market is at an all-time high and unemployment has never been lower.   

 

"But never mind that crap  and never mind what people say about it.   Just look around at the incredible amount of new construction that's happening....it's EVERYWHERE.   It's  absolutely unbelievable how much growth and new build this country has seen in the last few years....and it's happening across the board:   commercial, residential, and industrial.   

 

And  it's still happening today.   Every time I go to an area where I haven't been in a year or two, I'm constantly saying,   "Holy crap, that huge  warehouse complex wasn't there last year....and that huge residential subdivision;  where the hell did that come from?  That was all farmland a year ago."   

 

The amount of new growth and expansion we've seen is just incredible....but none of it would have been possible if the economy was as bad as some people are saying.    So you can either believe what they're telling you....or you can believe everything that's happening right in front of you and all around you."

Meanwhile Biden is there at a ribbon cutting yesterday for a huge, new state of the art microchips plant in Krazy Kari's Arizona, made possible by the CHIPS act and the repubs will hate on it until it's time to take credit for the economic benefits.  That plus real infrastructure projects going on everywhere. Thanks Biden!

I’m not suggesting everything is all fine and rosy by any stretch.    
 

I’m no economist, nor do i possess any real knowledge on the subject.   However,  it seems to me the pandemic ignited a massive economic reset;  we can no longer judge things by the old rules and standards of 5-10 years ago.  
 

Biden talked about this very early in the pandemic referred to it as a “K-shaped economy”:    Those who had done well in the old economy would do VERY well as the economy recovered…but those who were already struggling would see things get even worse. 
 

And based on my own observations, that exactly how it’s worked out….especially with metropolitan & suburban areas vs small towns and rural areas.  The country’s population centers are growing and expanding at an absolutely incredible rate….but a lot of small rural country towns appear to be dying, full of empty abandoned storefronts and little or no sign of growth or renewal.  
 

And pretty much every city you go to, the homeless problem is much bigger and far more visible than it was 5 years ago, as many low-income people lost their jobs and homes and are now living on the streets with tent cities springing up all over the place.  
 

All our traditional metrics show the economy is going gangbusters.  
 

What isn’t reflected is the growing segment of the population at the bottom of the food chain… people who were often overlooked and taken for granted before and who are struggling now more than ever.    I don’t know that we’ll ever have a truly accurate assessment of the economy until that segment of the population is accounted for.

It doesn't help that you have to make over 100k to even be "middle class" at this point.
