I choose empathy for Charlie Kirk even though he didn't afford that same empathy to those outside his 'tribe.' Putting aside his faults, I commend him as a family man and someone who believed in debating ideas in the public square, a central tenant of democracy.

There’s no reason celebrate someone who believed in “debating ideas in the public square” when he did it dishonestly. It was just his angle to push a bullshit right wing message of hate.

Right and while you don't hate and wish deaths on leftists, merely mock them there are conservatives that do hate and wish death o leftists. The same way you don't want those values assigned to you nor do you wish your entire side to viewed that way is how MOST people on the left feel. I hope that the next time someone on the left dies to political violence, the right treats it with the same level of empathy and compassion they're demanding for Charlie. Past behavior tells me many won't but hopefully the tone around these conversations start to change going forward.

I don't think most are praising the assassination but they certainly don't feel empathy for it. There is a difference there. If Anthony Fauci got shot to death in broad day light tomorrow we both know that there would be a loud portion of the right making jokes about "the shot" and making memes. We saw the memes when Pelosi's elderly husband was brutally attacked. My point isn't that one makes the other right but rather that hate begets hate and violence begets violence. The leftist that don't feel bad, refuse to feel bad because of the treatment they've felt from conservatives. Equally, the conservatives feel little empathy for leftists for the same reason. Rather than argue who is justified in feeling no empathy, we need to work towards a place where empathy is the baseline for everyone regardless of the victim's views. I get it might piss you off to know that there are people genuinely delighting in his death, just also know that they are in the extreme minority; they're just loud and online about it. Star killer is a pussy. He doesn’t piss me off. But I agree with your premise that violence begets violence. I don’t remember anybody saying corny ass shit when the Minnesota politician was tragically murdered. “She loves killing unborn  babies so it’s ironic she was killed by somebody that was also a baby at one point, haha.” That shit is lame as hell and if any of my buddies said that I’d call them out.
