They're unproven gambles. I feel differently about vets because they've proven the ability to perform. It's a tough analogy because the NFL owner is going to make a wild amount of money regardless. It probably wouldn't be that big a difference if making money as a housing developer was restricted to 32 people and builders were an extremely limited and highly sort after skill, and there was an active market in the 32 developers trying to find new skilled builders or competing for signing on existing proven ones. I don't know why the Texans decided to get the ball rolling on giving Higgins a guaranteed contract exactly, but they probably didn't do it because they have the opinion that players should be given guaranteed contracts as a matter of principle, so equally I don't think being philosophically opposed to the idea is going to stop it outright either. The fact it was a measly 2nd round contract for a guy they probably had a 1st round grade on probably played a part. I'm sure they'll be opposed to giving Stroud a fully guaranteed mega deal when the time comes, due to that being a much larger commitment. The funny thing is, the league employs all sorts of measures to try and stifle true free markets for players that would probably lead to competitions for players that result in many more guaranteed contracts, as a means to win signings. So while they obviously don't want to have to do stuff like this, I think when it comes down to it, they know that would be the result if the system wasn't so tightly controlled. It's a concession to be made when needed and it will likely continue to be more so going forward, regardless of the philosophical opposition to the idea. And also, it is just about the raw money and profits. A league of guaranteed contracts could also be a league of lower salary caps, owners still basically control the market. They came up with the new rules to make the contracts reasonable across the board, for players and owners.
