I just think this election will be about turnout, younger votes and energy. The campaign needs to lean into that. None of the boring white guys most are projecting seem to fit that well
ctm
The most important qualification of the VP pick is that he be seen immediately as qualified to be President. You can't have a Palin or Quale. If you can surpass that bar, even better. A huge percentage of people will initially know little to nothing about the person. The first media reports and Google searches are critical to forming public opinion. The campaign can't be on the defensive from the beginning. One reason I like Mark Kelly is that he was a fighter pilot and then an astronaut. That's instant credibility with a lot of people. Starkiller
Her running mate probably has to be a white guy. But other than that they could really go any direction. I like Kelly because of his background (military, astronaut, wife nearly assassinated) and the arguments that Kamala is a big lib would be balanced out with a moderate. Plus his seat would automatically go to a Dem picked by the governor. And AZ is a swing state even if it’s not as big as MI or PA. I guess she could go really nuts and pick Al Franken, but somehow that seems unlikely… Edited July 23, 2024 by Starkiller Titans279

It's the two candidates and their spouses, the 4 of them, with arms raised. Classic photo. Add Gabby Giffords and Kelly and this is powerful stuff. And I have no doubt she'll give a great speech. Not Obama level but she won't talk about Hannibal Leckter either. Edited July 23, 2024 by ctm

One thing I'm confident of is Mark Kelly will play a lot better in the suburbs, where the election will be won, than J D Vance. Trump doubled down on MAGA with the Vance pick. He was over confident he had the election won against Biden and didn't expand his voter appeal. In Trump World, everyone gets thrown under the bus eventually. And when that person happens to be his VP, they build a gallows in his honor. ctm, Starkiller, MadMax, and 3 others 4

His seat would be safe for 2 years but he could push AZ blue which would allow Harris to lose WI. PA is the state that worries me and Shapiro is toxic in MI. Lots to Navigate. Kelly normalizes Harris a little bit. It's a little harder to argue that she's some California extreme liberal when she's standing next to a veteran and astronaut. He's also the right ago at 60, imo. Not too old and not too young. An experienced guy with instant credibility on announcement day. JMO IsntLifeFunny, Justafan, and oldschool
