I will say I agree with you that we need to get the budget under control.

 

I think we can do most of that through increased revenue though. I'd be happy to have a conversation about phasing out social security benefits for those making over $250k yearly in other retirement income as long as we're also having a concurrent conversation about drastically increasing taxes on the absurdly wealthy as well and implementing a corporate minimum tax threshold.

That's not enough to fix the problems with social security.    

 

Taking away social security from the rich is already a tax, since they paid into it.   I have no problem with increasing taxes on the absurdly wealthy, but not drastically.

By drastically I mean significantly. Not draconian 75% tax rates as many progressives want - I think that's too far.

Do you happen to know how much money and what percent of the given budget goes towards families of immigrants with children born in the US (I don't)? How big of a $ problem is this particular aspect?

Just eliminate the cap on the taxes for people earning more than $250k (or whatever the cap is now).

Can we review cooperate subsidies first, then means testing for beneficiaries burning up their SS checks at the Vegas slot machines.

I said start, as in to prioritize those with resources versus the clarion call of entitlement abuse from relatively needy people.  I'm just tired of the immigrant song  (LZ shoutout!) always being outed first -- the entire imagery -- versus the fat cat industries and individuals that have built in entitlements , yet are seemingly not elevated to the same level of bad actor. IMO, comprehensive Immigration reform needs to be addressed separately, including legislation regarding access to public assistance.  Additionally. I'm not sure there's the kind of savings opportunities there, compared to the +340mil Americans already here

 

About 86.9 percent of people living in the United States were native-born citizens, 6 percent were naturalized citizens, and 7.1 percent were non-citizens.

Would be nice to see the stats on this because I've read that poor folks and illegals take less benefits available to them by far compared to those that don't actually need them. Money allotted to the poor is never close to being used up. 
 

Poverty by America is a good read if you have time. You've probably heard most of it before in some way or form, but the benefits not taken by poor people because of distrust and other barriers of entry was enlightening. Pretty quick 180 page read that came out last year with 100 pages of sources and notes.
