Elon buying Twitter can be a net benefit if it causes Twitter to cease being the main thing that drives what the media covers and talks about.

If he's primarily looking to make money, he'll only lean into that stuff.

Musk had announced he will / would remove twitter's ban on Trump.

Surprising nobody with a brain, but clearly telegraphing that the direction he wants to take the platform is away from reasonable moderation towards doors wide-open misinformation, bullying and bot cultivation.

Twitter is already a shit hole and it’s going to get much worse if Elon is at the helm.

It's great for news if you work to limit your feed to the things you actually want to see. But there's a hell of a lot of bullshit on there and it'll only get worse.

More importantly, the negative impacts of Twitter will grow even more exponentially.

Trump getting back on Twitter is bad for Trump and his supporters, he embarrasses himself and them. They all wanted him to stop  tweeting

I doubt it moves the needle much. I doubt there are many voters who will be repulsed by something he says now that weren’t repulsed by what he’s said in the past. And I doubt he’s going to gain too many more voters on the platform either.

Oh I don't think it moves the needle much but it is embarrassing

Trump being on Twitter is not the problem. The bots and the algorithms that drive content feeds are the problem. If he can improve that it will be a net positive.

Giving dangerous people a platform is always a problem but an action of denying them a platform needs to have good cause ... and there's no reasonable assessment of history that could suggest Twitter banning Trump was anything but done with good cause. The idea that it's not a problem is simply a denial of Trump's history, the history of how media covers Trump tweeting and the history of how his tweets are perceived and propagated through networks by algorithms and also people in general. It absolutely will magnify his voice and his influence. To believe otherwise is almost as laughable as the idea that he'll somehow be more responsible this time.

Yes, algorithms are a problem and there have been studies done on both Twitter and Facebook (and elsewhere besides) that show how algorithms propagate conservative and fringe conspiracies more than others ... so, sure, it would be great if Musk could improve that. Is there any reason to believe he will, however? I haven't seen him claim that as a focus. Did I miss it?

The conspiracy I heard you talk about was that this was all a rightwing and Russian funded op to get Trump back on Twitter. Just because Trump would no longer banned doesn't mean that the conspiracy is true.

Go through the "Five Why's" of Trump returning to Twitter and let us know what the final conclusion is.

Musk could be spending his money attempting to solve real problems in America but he chooses this shit instead, and people need to fucking grow up and smell the goddamn coffee.

Did you just see this previous space race? People with too much money aren't going to solve real world problems.

https://www.cnbc.com/2022/05/12/twitter-market-cap-has-dropped-to-9-billion-below-musk-purchase-price.html

As Elon Musk pursues ownership of Twitter, shares of the social media company are dropping, suggesting some concern among investors that the deal won’t reach the finish line.

Twitter has slid nearly 13% since reaching its high for the year in late April. As of market close on Thursday, the stock traded at $45.08, well below the $54.20 that Musk agreed to pay on April 27. The difference represents more than $9 billion in market value.

Though Twitter’s board approved the purchase, it could still take months for the deal to close, and there’s no guarantee that it will. Musk would have to pay a $1 billion breakup fee should he choose to walk away. The Tesla CEO is worth more than $220 billion.
