ctm
Russia may very well take Kyiv. That's to be determined. But they are going to lose this war. It's just a matter of when and on what terms. The tricky part is how Putin is allowed to save face without significant escalation in some form against the West. tgo

Popular Post ctm
Putin isn't smart. He made a stupid, perhaps fatal, mistake. Biden, NATO, and a big part of the rest of the world are united against him. That in itself is no small accomplishment. He just miscalculated badly that Ukraine would roll over. If he commits more than a fraction of Russian military might, they take Ukraine in days. Its all but certian Russia is going to take Ukraine but holding it is another matter. reo

Its all but certian Russia is going to take Ukraine but holding it is another matter. The issue for him isn’t taking Ukraine - it is taking Ukraine without razing it to the ground. If he wanted, he could certainly flatten major Ukrainian cities and then rule over the rubble. But that effectively ends his rule, imo. reo, oldschool, and IsntLifeFunny

It's all but assured Russia will take Ukraine but at what loss? Putin's fears are coming true and it's his own doing. Finland and Sweden may join NATO, Germany is upping their defense spending, Ukraine will garner even more support from the west and while I doubt NATO will invite them to join, the EU might. To top it all off the Russian Military looks inept. All the above may be enough to erode his support from the Oligarchs and Military leadership. The answer to getting rid of Putin, isn't war with the West. It's damaging his credibility within Russia. tgo

It's not even about taking Ukraine, this invasion has essentially ended Putin's reign, I don't think he can save face at this point. The only question at this point is how long he remains in power tgo, and smokeater

Don't forget that of all the troops that we see attributed to the Russians, not near all of them are fighters. Many are support and logistics. They've also already outrun their supply lines in just 4 days. In addition, I think they will have much bigger problems when the Ukranians get more javelins and stingers. Those tanks are sitting ducks to the javelin in an urban area where movement is slow. The stingers will make the Russian helicopters and low flying planes very vulnerable as well.
