scine09
This isn’t going anywhere. Robinson definitely involved and complicit but it’s an organizational problem How? Jrob has a boss and if his boss says Mariota must be protected and developed at all costs, what is jrob supposed to do? He can't go out and spend top 5 draft picks on a QB without ownership signing off on it. you really need to let this go. There is no way Jrob has a brand new GM in his first position as a GM would have the carte blanche to do the things you are asking for. Mariota is still here and killing this team because ownership likes him and demands it.
BudsOilers
I clearly state it's the organization and that includes Amy Adams, Underwood, and Robinson. All I am saying is that team basically locked the entire thing to Mariota and either didn't consider or mis-evaluated the alternative options that they had in their control. I get the timing of 2016 with the new regime made going for Wentz or Goff and trading Mariota difficult to do although a confident GM, however new, certainly could have made a compelling case to ownership if Wentz/Goff >>>> Mariota. 2017 was a bit different. More data on MM, good and bad. Looking at the end season stat line is one thing but there was plenty of up/down play and they had the #1 run game in football that year to help. Plus MM ended the season with a broken fibula after not finishing season one too. Cap wise, a team can absolutely afford two first round pick QB's for a period of time. Robinson absolutely could have hedged the MM bet with Mahomes or Watson if they thought out of the box. They'd be better for it today if they had. Odds are that you wouldn't be paying MM $ 20.9 M this year to run a low scoring, dumbed down passing attack.....

If the FO hits on the QB they do draft, and he turns out to be a long-term franchise QB at that level, this won't mean that much in the long run. We're all tired of this act and would love to have the answer now , but the actions over the off-season have to suggest that everyone's hands are tied to some degree

No1TitansFan
If Mahomes and Watson were such can't miss prospects, why did they get drafted where they did instead of the top slots? Everyone is a genius in hindsight.
OzTitan
The whole situation is shitty and it's that way because MM isn't good enough to be elite. If he was, none of this would be an issue. I know that's obvious but I feel it's worth pointing out, as missing out on a 2nd overall QB will almost always wreak havoc on a franchise. There are always problem like this under the surface, but sometimes things work out and they never see the light of day. The team's marketing felt obliged to promote Marcus as the QBotF, even after a point when that F was looking shaky. You can't really blame them there, a highly drafted QB is always going to be promoted by their organization while he is still starting. Doing this while not being willing to extend the guy as the QBotF is a bit suspect, however, and speaks to a disconnect between what the franchise is pushing and what they believe. This never ends well, and this situation won't end well either. It's hard to blame a team for not picking one of these other QBs when they had the chance, but the ultimate goal is a championship team and it looks like those moves would have given the Titans a better chance at that. Anytime you miss out on that you have to evaluate why. Unfortunately I think it's largely bad luck - had the Titans been picking 2nd when Watson or Wentz or Mahomes was there instead of Mariota, one would be on the Titans. Number9
A series of events led to where we are now. JRob Years. The owner gave an ultimatum to the new potential GM's, develop Mariota by keeping Mularkey. The first season the Titans won nine games. The second season the team won nine games and made the playoffs. Preseason Mariota was touted as a future elite QB. The third season the team won nine games again. The fourth season JRob has built out the team and we can't score. The major mistake JRob has made was not getting a real starter as backup due to Mariota's injuries in the second season. He could have used a 2nd, 3rd round pick on a real developmental QB or a real starter as backup. We would have made the playoffs 2018, but the team had just made the playoffs w/Mariota. Plus, Mariota is a great franchise face and still had a great deal of support. Imagine at any year JR called AAS up and said "I think we need to dump this injury prone, noodle arm, no passing MF." StephenIsLegend
9 hours ago, BudAdams said: First off, you are so wrong about QB's that you should be the one not diving into ANY discussion regarding QB evaluations. Although I never was sold on Mariota, I dismissed picking a QB like most fans and your trade Mariota/draft Wentz is one example. That's completely not the issue, however. I don't own the team or run the football operations for the team. It's pretty obvious that they didn't explore all of their options because they lasered in on the build around Mariota, which undoubtedly was misguided. Did they objectively self scout Mariota (good/bad) after the new regime came in? Did they objectively scout the top QB prospects in the following years (2016 on) and compare to what they had? Did they think out of the box, considering things like rookie contract cap impacts, injury rate of mobile QB's, trade value for a young, 1st contract QB asset? If the answer is No, that's a problem and indictment of the team's pay it safe/conventional thinking mindset. There's a reason why the Titans nare always trying to find a great QB and it's rooted in poor QB evaluations, closed minded thinking, and boxing themselves into drafting for need at the position rather than taking the best player. Locker and Mariota were both drafted using this flawed process and then the team compounded it by taking QB off the table as an option in subsequent years when options available proved to be upgrades. It's the process and skill set of the decision makers that's my concern and I've provided plenty of information to support it. The fact some of you cannot comprehend what I'm saying is rather astonishing. Regardless of anyone’s ability to recognize and evaluate talent on this site, your premise was silly and asinine. NOD came in and won games for the team to make it to the SB. The backup should be able to do that for the team. The Saints got Teddy and he's down there winning games while Brees is recovering. Good backup QB cost money. Blaine Gabbert won with the team running the wildcat, then the team won his next start when Mariota came in injured off the bench. The Patriots have won when developmental QB came in and to replace Brady. Belichick is a great coach, but I doubt he could win with 2018 Gabbert. OILERMAN
My question is why was Mariota placed in a position above having to win the starting job this training camp and preseason against Tannehill. How has he earned this status? He's been terrible most of his career aside from a few games here and there and an 8 game streak in 2016. They went out of there way to make sure it wasn't an open competition. Vrabel was condescending last week after beating a shitty Falcons team in regards to the media not asking about the QBs job. Of course people have asked about the QBs job, he hasn't produced and has killed the offense. To act like questioning Mariota was somehow out of line is ridiculous. This team has a pretty damn good roster, the division has just fallen apart around them while they have stayed healthy. It's totally theirs for the taking. The QB is the main problem and there is a potential upgrade on the bench. The organization is willing to destroy the entire season at the expense of protecting one of the worst starting QBs in the league who isn't even under contract beyond this season. I'd honestly like to know why.
