wtenn
On the kickoffs I would say just give the kicking team the option to kick it or give it the opponent on their own 25 (or even on their own 20). That way, almost always the teams will choose not to kick, but the option is still there if they need an onside kick. Tyler Rose Fan

They already have their alternative in place for the onside kicks
nine
Both are low-percentage plays....but a team’s chances of converting on 4th & 12 are significantly higher than their chances of recovering an onside kick. titanruss

Yeah, I honestly like the onside kick more than this alternative.. I feel that the situation here is a bit too much in favor of the team that is down

I wonder where the opposing team gets the ball if they don’t convert it.

Maybe they should make it 4th & 20 then.

The NFL badly needs a farm system and this league has some great potential as a guinea pig of sorts to try different ideas. That’s the interesting part. I remember the USFL having instant replay before the NFL did. Mythos27

Denali
WFL USFL XFL NFL Europe Doesn't that provide enough proof? It never works out. They may look exciting at first, but ultimately people know it's not the same thing as the real NFL. It's like kissing your sister. And I'm not talking about a super hot step sister. I'm talking the real deal. You know, incest.

I suspect it will be more interesting than an onside kick, which is basically straight dumb luck. 4th & 12 gives a team a better chance of converting and retaining possession at the 40....but if they don’t, the other team get possession inside the 40. It’s just a different risk-vs-reward opportunity. The payoff is easier to achieve, but the penalty for failing is greater.
