OILERMAN Blog week 15

As soon as the Titans lost to the Jags Thursday night rumors started to swirl about Jay Cutler landing with the Titans. The Titans and Jay Cutler are both in about the same position in the NFL, rock bottom. The Titans are coming off a prime time loss to the lowly Jags and Jay Cutler has been benched for performance in favor of Jimmy Clausen. How can the Titans and Cutler not end up together in 2015?

At first glance I was ready to totally dismiss the idea of the Titans trying to land Jay Cutler. The Bears OC recently threw Cutler under the bus, the Bears have been a big flop finally leading to this weeks benching. The Bears offense has been one of the biggest underachieving units in the entire league and most of the blame points directly at Cutler. Trestman said the benching was "performance based" and last year when Cutler missed time Josh McCown was nothing short of great in the same offense. Cutler's stock is at an all time low and at 31 there seems little chance of him ever developing into a legitimate franchise QB.

So why would the Titans want to pursue Jay Cutler?

His stock is at an all time low! That's why the Titans should pursue Jay Cutler!

The Titans would have absolutely nothing to lose going after Jay Cutler right now. The Bears can't get rid of him fast enough and want to erase any memory of the monster contract he was given. The Titans can likely get Cutler without giving up a premium draft pick and would only be on the hook for his 2015 salary, 15.5 mill. The Titans have all kinds of cap space and just happen to be short on proven QB talent.

When you totally remove the negative talk of Cutler and look strictly at the QB it's not nearly as bad as advertised. Cutler was on pace to throw for 30+TDs and over 4000 yards while completing 66% of his passes. If there was ever a position where guys pan out after 30 years old after changing teams it's QB.

The only drawback going after Cutler is the fact it puts Mettenberger on the back burner. The Titans own Mettenberger's right's for another 3 seasons and he's not going anywhere. In fact there is nothing wrong with letting Cutler and Mettenberger compete for the starting QB position. Cutler's in no position to be given the starting job and if Mettenberger legitimately beats out Cutler then it can only mean good things.

I don't have much faith Jay Cutler is going to step into the starting QB spot for the Titans and turn this ship around. At the same time I see no reason not to give it a shot. There is no real downside. Worse case scenario Cutler is acquired, plays poorly and loses his job to Mettenberger at some point in the 2015 season and the Titans release him with no cap implications. The Titans are in no position to contend in 2015 anyway.

After going through the 4-5 stages of depression over Cutler overnight, I've come to accept it as a possibility that he may be able to help us next year.. If he can be re-claimed, it will cement Whiz

As a faithful reader of the Oilerman Weekly Blog I must say I was let down with this one.  I have made several posts about why I don't like the idea and will leave it at that.  I will say, I don't lik

Doesn't dead money transfer with a player when traded? Also, he has a 10 mil. Injury guarantee for 2016.

I think he'd be willing to waive some guarantees to get back to TN though

I see no reason to bring in Cutler at this point. I would rather just make Mett the official starter outright. Bringing in Cutler does not help in his development and just takes away cap space (though they could perhaps mitigate the cap space with a new contract).

Of course, that all hinges on the coaches' view of Mettenberger...

If they do it, it's to put butts in seats.  Saw a few tumbleweeds at the last home game...

I don't like Cutler, but if Mett sitting on the bench for a year stunts his growth, he's never going to be the guy, regardless.  I think the young QB mis-managment thing (sit or start?) is overblown -- if anything, it's either Mett or the Whisenhunt offense to blame, not time on the bench.  Sure, Mettsiah would be further along after starting another season, but it's totally arbitrary to treat a season on the bench as some sort of "lost" season.  The only loss is for us as evaluators.  That might mean potentially not drafting a qbof while waiting at the altar, but I struggle to see how it stunts growth if the Titans remain committed to developing the guy.

Does bringing in Cutler put butts in seats? Is he going to bring in the throngs of Vanderbilt football fans who don't show up to Vandy games either?

It's certainly arguable. Some people (probably Vandy alums) here were sporting "Midway Jay" shirts when he was traded to Chicago, for what that's worth. Of course, that was five years ago. I'd rather see Mett stumble and grow (if it's to be), but the fair weather fans and Vandy faithful might gravitate to a known (albeit somewhat faded) commodity.

If they don't win, if won't matter after a few games, either way. Titans fans are being introduced to a new brand of terrible and the Preds fever is supplanting interest. I don't really care about empty seats (well earned), but Tommy boy may have a bus load of Nashburgers to finish off after each game (it's funny because he's fat -- bless his heart).

The ONLY way the Titans should even consider this is if Cutler is cut and goes to waivers and they can sign him from the bargain bin on a prove-it deal.  There's no way a team this bad should spend $15M for a QB like that when there are so many holes on the team.

I don't see why not.

If you do trade for him, trade a late-round pick you were going to use on a QB anyway.  Cutler would still be better than any developmental QB that late in the draft, especially a weak QB draft.  Then you have your legitimate competition for Mett.

Plus, it puts butts in seats.

So you see no reason to take on a huge, bad contract as long as it helps you in any way on the field until you find a suitable replacement.

The .... irony ... is ... killing ..... me ... can't survive ....

Couldn't disagree more.  This is a team that needs to turn over half it's roster.  15 Million would get you a guard, good receiver and a power back or 3-4 decent defensive players that fit the 3-4.  Or you could spend it on a guy who isn't any better than the two quarterbacks we have under contract.
