Outside running backs basically every position has their peak around 25-28. I dont think you will see as big of an issue with this as some think. Most of the guys who wont come out will never make it in the nfl so it isn't much of a loss. It will likely just lead to special teams and depth guys being slightly older. Once the new system is in palce for another few years it should find its own equilibrium. These guys cant stay in school forever. If they want to make it in the nfl putting off joining the league doesn't help their chances of sticking around for the 2nd contract. The thing is, the majority of them are out of the league before a year 5 halpens. 27 percent of 5th rounders get a new contract, 22 percent of 6th rounders, and 15 percent of 7th rounders. For the average player that doesn't improve their skill over time, that is their best years and their only years. Not to mention late rounders are usually older, they are seniors, they redshirted, they are more often 23 or 24 than 21 or 22. After four years you're 27 and about to approach that slow decline. The fact is they don't have much chance in the league beyond their first contract. Why take the risk for a real contract after putting in 4 years for less money than they can get in college.
