Its not if you CAN. Its about the miss rate. I feel like I say this a dozen times. You can get hall of fame level players literally in any round. Brady is a prime example- that doesn't mean you target the 6th round for your qb. The higher you draft, the better chance to hit on a startign quality player... The lower you draft- particularly after 2nd round-- the higher chance of a miss. Can you target guards in the 3rd round? Yes. And its normal to do so.. but dont count on them to be a starter day 1 and they may not pan out at all. TitansFan23, and Number9

This is where the rubber meets the road for scouting and overall front office competency. Pragidealist

Kevin Zeitler - who everyone wants back- was drafted in the first. Skoronksi was drafted in the first. Guards can be found later, premium first-round picks are usually spent on "blue-chip" interior prospects who can dominate in both run-blocking and pass-protection. And some of those can fall to the 2nd round at times. The deeper you go, the less guaranteed you are of a high quality player at any position. You guys take a guideline and seem to turn it into a rule Here are the top 15 guards in the nfl per pff. Yes I know that isn't ideal but its the easiest list to work with. Meinerz 3rd Lindstrom 1st Dotson 4th Nelson 1st Skoronski 1st Thuney 3rd Lewis 3rd Onwenu 6th Avila 2nd Zeitler 1st Ingram 2nd Smith 1st Steen 3rd Seumalo 3rd McCormick 4th Thats 5 first rounders. 2 second rounders. 5 third rounders. 2 fouths and a sixth. You can find plenty of good interior offensive linemen in the middle rounds. This isn't like edge rushers or qbs where the best of the best are almost always gone by pick 45. Resource allocation and opportunity cost are something alot of people struggle with. I worked for a guy when I started in construction who would pay me to drive around with him and pick up metal and wood people were throwing away. Sure its free but he was also not making money while we did it.

The real question is how good were they as a rookie though… I wouldn’t remotely trust a day 3 OL to start. Those are developmental guys. A day 2 guy? Sure. You can draft a guard in round 3 and expect him to start. I certainly wouldn’t draft a LT in round 3 expecting him to start week 1 but I think a guard early in round 3 will be expected to be good enough to play right away. I agree that you could easily draft a bust and then you’re stuck with him, but you just have to trust the scouts. I would be lying if I told you how good all of these guys were to start their careers. I want to say thuney was from the start and Im pretty sure meinerz was as well. That's not the same as saying "we can just wait and get a g in 3" and expect the same quality and liklihood of success as one taken in 2 or 1. Well there isn’t likely to be a round 1 G this year (sadly no lock like Warmack for us to get). The top guards generally go in round 2, maybe late round 1. Good guards are found in round 3 pretty often. A couple of years ago 7 guards went in round 3 and I assure you that all of them were expected to start. Bongo59
Several in fact. Our best OL seem to come from lower rounds.

The other got 6 starts.. on the raiders. The third did not start at all. I can share 23 later. Basially.. it can happne. usually bad teams. but sometimes a good team can find a starting g in the 3rd round.
