Nobody thinks Callahan was the primary reason the team sucked. Was he a significant contributing factor? Absolutely, along with the rest of the offensive coaching staff...most of which are still in place. So does the offense still suck? Yes. Do I think they overall look better post-Callahan. Yes. By a lot? No. They still struggle in the red zone, which is a big reason they're still struggling to generate points even though they've been moving the ball better.

The eye test tells me the team is being managed better under McCoy than it was under Callahan. That shouldn't be surprising to anyone since McCoy has actually had some previous success as a head coach.

In any case it's impossible to prove one way or the other exactly what's responsible for any improvement, so 5 pages of arguing back and forth about it seems like arguing for the sake of arguing.

But I guess that's what we do here.

The sheer amount of conversation that took place about how bad Callahan was and how much he was making the team worse dwarfed discussion about damn near everything else. The talk was definitely that he was making the players look worse than they really were. Few people directly said that the coaching was the primary factor but the volume of posts and the passion with which they were made certainly created that perception. Any comments directing attention away from coaching and towards player accountability either fell on deaf ears or were countered with accusations of thinking coaching doesn't matter. I should know, since I was the one making a lot of those posts. Passionately arguing about something 24/7 is a funny way to deal with something you don't think is a major factor.

Ward does not look better.  He still is making a ton of mistakes and missing reads and throws.

He's looking better at times b/c they've solidified his reads.

I can accept that but he has zero consistency.  And I am not blaming him.  I think the play calling is horrendous and they are shoving Pollard down his throat when they need Spears in the pass game.  Dike needs more plays.  This staff forgot the TE exists at all and generally they help rookies.  Not so with this staff.

It just wasn’t fun to watch.  This one looks better because as you said there are some long plays sprinkled in .  And it gives you hope .  Fans need hope , especially if you are rooting for this team .

But the results end up the same and absent serious talent infusion (not going to happen this year) unlikely to change.

I mean Ayomanor has dropped passes under Callahan and McCoy .  No coach or scheme is going to change that.

Well put.

yeah... I'm not claiming she is some great owner. I'm just pushing back against the idea she's a terrible owner who is keeping the organization down. She''s a run of the mill pro sports owner who inherited their team. Fan just want blood because the team has been terrible since the TNF game against the Packers 3+ years ago

She's a terrible owner who was also getting some really bad advice.  Bad combination.  I like the current structure and hope she lets these two guys run the show.  She's put herself in a media doom-loop which is ironic.  She does spend more money on the team infrastructure which is a positive after Bud...

Dike and the rookie TE are not dropping shit.  Throw it to them.  They do not scheme this O at all for success.  Spears is a machine in space.  Give him 7 targets a week.  Sell Pollard to anyone.  Cut him.

I actually agree with this .  They need to target Helm more and quit giving carries to Pollard.

I went and looked up some of the game logs with Hardagee as OC in 2023 w/LV and he didn’t really target the TE as much there either

She's obviously not doing that.  They were preaching patience, stability, not failing the qb.. etc.     I would have more optimism about the org if I felt she was letting them run things.

For reference, this is the type of read they've solidified I'd bet.

So instead of Ridley having that option, it's set as a post. So now when Ward drops back, he knows where Ridley will be. Where before they had to read the leverage correctly together to be on the same page, now Ward just knows where Ridley will be.

It makes the offense a lot less dynamic but it makes it easier to be on the same page. That means you can play guys like Dike over Lockett. You don't have to have Van Jefferson out there who has experience in these types of offenses w/ Stafford.

So we get some chunk plays by Dike more often when we pick the right play vs the right coverage but the offense is a lot less dynamic once the players get on the same page.

And it takes more than 6 weeks into a QB's rookie year to get an offense like this down... which is why firing Callahan this early was dumb.

The whole point of the play design is that when it's ran correctly it can beat Cover 2 and Cover 3. Vs cover 3, you pair it w/ the dagger route and he pulls the corner down so when the safety heads to the middle zone, Ridley runs the corner in his face. If the corner doesn't come down on the dagger, you have the dagger. But then vs tampa 2, the safety plays outside leverage and Ridley reads it and does what he does.

But when you solidify the route, it can only beat cover 2 or cover 3, not both.
