There are now more options than the were at that time, a more appealing QB, and plenty more examples of young OCs successfully making the transition to HC (I'm projection Coen and Johnson here). The first phase was forcing Callahan to relinquish playcalling duties - one of the major reasons he was hired. I still believe this is their top concern. Don't agree this time around they are looking for a leader of the franchise if that happens to be an offensive minded guy great but the search won't be only focused on guys with an offensive background. I'd bet they are embarrassed that they threw Levis under the bus only for Ward to look terrible, and getting this offense and passing game right is still the #1 concern. scine09
It's not about how well a coach can draw up plays. That's for the coordinators. They need someone who can manage the clock, get his team ready to play each week and overall just have a disciplined team. They can't be hiring a coach because he can draw up plays. There's way more to it than that. VanCityTitan, and DCTitan
TeamRamrod
“Tennessee will embark on a methodical, deliberate coaching search that should include some of the top names like Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy, Steelers OC Arthur Smith, Colts defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo, former Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy, Broncos DC Vance Joseph and others.” First actual “reported” interest in McCarthy and Joseph I’ve seen. japan, and titanskick8851

You mean the process where they interviewed McDonald and Quinn among others? We all wanted them to hire an Off guy but they interviewed the full gambit of candidates. titanskick8851

It is becoming really annoying how some people are using bad result as an excuse to paint the last HC hiring process as a sham. Facts are Callahan was an in demand candidate during that hiring cycle even as recently as two days ago Pelissero and Rapoport said had he not been hired by the Titans he would of been the Panthers HC and also would of had a second interview with the Falcons. Some times people interview for a job they know they can't do and get hired. other times, people genuinely go for a top dog job thinking they are ready, ace the interview and then fail at it. Its pretty clear what we had with Callahan was the latter. The fact they hired him doesn't mean it was a sham, the process broken, or that he lied to get the job. it simply means he didn't get it done like most NFL HCs. TerryBoats
Callahan was a terrible candidate. His experience was easily verifiable and underwhelming/inadequate. His name should have never come up in the process. Edited October 19 by TerryBoats oldschool

Well I'm taking them explicitly saying that they won't be looking for a type this time to mean that they were moreso looking for a type last time. I'm just going by their own words. Only now after callahans failure are people acting like they had a sham or narrow search. ChesterCopperpot1

All I'm saying is that if they were locked in on hiring an offensive guy last time (which is what I'm taking their words to mean otherwise why say it) then I'm glad they're not too focused on that this time around. Obviously we have no way of knowing but it's possible they gave the offensive guys a bit of an edge last time. I'm not necessarily re-litigating Callahan's hiring since the process seemed legitimate. Even if you interview a variety of candidates, if you go into the process looking for a specific type then candidates that fit that type have a stronger chance of impressing you given your predisposition. Hearing them overly say they're going to avoid this is a good thing. oldschool
