Abdul Carter is going to be a good player. If you are a new GM for a bad team and have a high pick that you can’t mess up - it will be awful hard to pass on Carter, especially if your opening team building statement was about building up the lines as your first priority.

You have to be willing to still be in QB purgatory in 2026.

And fuck ESPN and the NFLN you pricks can't go to a commercial before the #1 pick.

Let us old-school football guys take a moment appreciate to the fact that the Titans earned the #1 overall pick the old-fashioned way.   Not by tanking or by trading up, but by simply being

I'd hate Hunter. The Titans best position is likely CB and you don't take a WR that high. If the Titans traded down to 3 and Carter went 2 I'd rather trade down again and maybe go for someone like Mem

You might have that problem even if you take Ward.

But I agree, they probably won’t pass on Ward unless they have a plan at QB.

Yes, you might.  QBs bust at a higher rate than other positiions. That will also be true next year and the year after, etc. The risk is high.  But the reward is even higher if you hit.

The risk isn't nearly as high with Carter, but the reward isn't as high either.

If they don't like Ward enough as a prospect to justify the pick, they shouldn't take him because they're afraid of being in QB purgatory.

To clarify, I didn't say they should.

If the Titans didn't need a QB it would be basically a no brainer to take Carter. He basically fits everything you want in a high pick. Need x talent x positional value

The fact they do need a QB makes it harder in a couple of ways - you're obviously drawn to the top QBs, and you are probably going to draw more trade offers. Who'd want to be a GM lol

Spot on.

Mel Kiper Jr just dropped his latest mock draft and he has switched teams from team QB in his previous mock drafts to team Abdul Carter in this one.

1. Tennessee Titans

Abdul Carter, OLB, Penn State

The quarterback question looms large here at No. 1. Could Tennessee trade the pick to a QB-needy team looking to land Miami's Cam Ward or Colorado's Shedeur Sanders? Sure. In fact, new GM Mike Borgonzi has even suggested the Titans will listen to offers. Could Tennessee also choose to take one of those passers itself here to replace Will Levis? Of course. But there are other ways to attack the quarterback position -- Aaron Rodgers? -- and I already said it's too early to start projecting trades.

Besides, the Titans would love having Carter -- who isn't working out this week at the combine -- on this defense. He creates so much pressure off the edge with the burst and instincts to get home for sacks. He had 12 of them in 2024, along with a nation-leading 23.5 tackles for loss. For a Tennessee team that was 25th in pressure (29.0%) this past season, sliding him next to Jeffery Simmons and T'Vondre Sweat makes a lot of sense.

Kiper lost me at Aaron Rodgers.  Not to mention that there are other ways to attack pass rusher than Carter.

In addition, a month from now and certainly by draft day, the veteran QB market is going to look completely different than it does today.  So if the Titans don't sign a vet free agents, their QB options for 2025 are going to be very narrow unless they take one at #1.

Like it or not if we are going with a veteran bridge qb him a kirk are reasonable options since they will cost next to nothing.

That remains to be seen.  Borgonzi has directly said that Levis will compete for the starting spot.  That kind of implies that he's going to be on the team.  We'll see for sure in  a few weeks.

 Absolutely, or the cost.

That in itself is not a reason to draft a QB at 1. In fact it gets teams in trouble often.

If they take Ward I understand and will trust the new decision makers. I don't pretend to know whether Ward is worthy of the #1 pick and to skip a player like Carter. I lean towards no.

We'll see what they do in free agency and that will tell a lot.

Kind of interested to hear the messaging and tone from the likes of Andrew Berry, Joe Schoen, John Spytek over the next couple of days when they speak at the combine and whether they are still leaving all options on the table.

Whether there is any truth to them or not you can't dispute the winds of whispers are all currently blowing in a direction that suggests the Titans don't love these top QB's.
