Yes he was but not at the same level as Johnson. The point remains either way. HC's say they will get the most of the current guy all the time during interviews and then start laying the ground work for their own guy. You could tell right away Cally wanted things in his QB Levis can't do. I'm sure the interview was along the line of "I will put Levis in a position to succeed, the rest is up to him". This idea Callahan wouldn't have taken the job if he wasn't all in on levis is absurd. Sometimes HC's only get one shot at a HC job in a given cycle. You think Cally or anyone else who isn't in the god tier of OFF Coaches like Reid or Payton are going to turn down a job they want because they don't like the QB? It rarely happens.

What strikes me is that the same people who proclaim that it was so obvious that Levis was a bust can in the same breath tell me that Callahan was a smart coach as he walked right into that situation. Do you honestly believe he wouldn't have gotten a job the following year or that anyone would have blamed him for turning down the Titans?

Give me a break.

I'm totally fine with the Titans drafting Ward. Enough people think he can be good and he's shown enough NFL traits. It would not be like the Titans overdrafting Anthony Richardson or Trey Lance.

Objectively speaking, players performed better in 2016 under Mularkey.  Lewan was arguably a Top 5 LT under him, B Jones improved from an average C to a really good one, and a couple JAGs at guards came together to create a top 5 OL in both of his seasons.  I think he did about as good as he could with that offensive group.

The hope was that Callahan could have a similar impact on the offense last year, but things were surprisingly worse than they were under Vrabel.

He wouldnt be blamed for turning down the titans but there is no gurantee he would get another offer. Things shift fast in the nfl. Gota strike while the iron is hot.

Yeah, the Bengals OC would be twisting in the wind after Burrow puts up another 5000 yard season. You guys are smarter than this.

Lol. You can revisit whatever you want. You're assessments are well documented. If it makes you feel better to try and cherry pick a season where an interim coach had to take over because things were so bad on a team that had so little talent that it just went 3-20 feel free to try and make a point.

Just make sure you talk about 2016 as well and compare that to Callahan's first year as a HC for an actual apples to apples (kinda) comparison.

You literally said the team was more competitive under Mularkey in 2015 than they were under Whisenhunt.  It’s a factually incorrect statement.

As far as the 2016 Titans versus the 2024 Titans, I can’t believe we’re even having this discussion.  One team was significantly better than the other one.  Mike Mularkey had a 10-36 stretch in his career as a head coach at one point.  Including in his time with the Titans.  You want to defend that?

You never know, he could get hurt, their line is atrocious. You also have the possibility of someone else or multiple guys becoming the hot new thing.

The nine wins included two against Jacoby Brissett, two against Blake Bortles, one against Tom Savage and one against Deshone Kizer.

Keiser AND Cody Kessler. They split reps that game haha.

I'm not known as a BC lover.  I've decided to give him some time to see if maybe his approach will work.  I listed to his interview with Chris Long today.  He sounds more confident, he explained some problems from last season and has more clarity about his plans.

He's a fast talker and gets on to new points a little quick.  If you listen he's gone on past his answer too quickly.  I moved back here from NYC.  After a little while, I recognized people weren't keeping up with what I was saying.  I dialed it back, started speaking a little slower and my reception improved.

You are not judging any coach with those rosters

Whiz was a total moron though, refused to adapt at all.

The pass protection was damn sure better under Mularkey

I’m not trying to.  @Justafan is trying to have some aha moment by saying how much better the 2016 team was under Mularkey than the 2024 team was under Callahan.  Well, yeah, I should hope so, it was significantly more talented.  Mularkey went 2-14 once with a terrible roster.  When you have a bad roster generally you don’t win many games.  It doesn’t matter much who the head coach is.

Yes, they were absolutely more competitive under Mularkey than under Whiz. Whiz won 3 games total his entire stint there. He took a 7-9 win team and turned them into a 2-14 one and was on track to win one in 2015 as well.

They were also more competitive at the end of 2015 than last season. Callahan looked outclassed against 3rd stringers last year.
