I get it.  I would like to kick the tires first to see if he is a viable option at RT.  He has been benched as a LT.  Is it that he is no good or just no good at LT?  I figure a 7th is less valuable than a guaranteed contract to experiment.  He was dominant in college as a RT.  Will it translate to the NFL?   I understand your point, though.

A trial run for a 7th rounder isn’t a bad idea. If he does well, you probably resign him before FA and don’t have to compete with other teams on the market.  Plus you don’t have to worry about wasting a high pick on an OT.  It’s not a bad idea.

I'd just keep Landry for anything less than a 2nd

Fellas, we aren't getting a 1st for Landry

We should approach dumping our players the way meth-heads deal with their loved ones' belongings; sell everything that isn't nailed down.

Callahan knows Willis from the Cleveland days.  No need to kick tires now as opposed to just signing him next March.  They need all the picks they have.

No need to wait to compete with 31 other teams.  Take control of the player in case it works out.  7th round pick rarely make rosters.

He's a FA at the end of the season so they'll have to compete regardless.

We will have tags and the ability to negotiate before the start of FA.  A transition tag and a least we will get compensation if he signs elsewhere (if he balls out at RT).  It's about control.

You don't get compensation on a transition tag.  The controlling team can either match the offer or let them sign with the new team.  No compensation and no they won't be trading for him and then franchise tagging him.
