Why in the hell would they use chemical weapons? Oh just to blame it Ukraine

To kill civilians on a scale large enough that they lose the will to fight and surrender to make it stop.

This is how extremists are born.

Civilians protest.

Brutal government cracks down.

Civilians fight back.

Government cracks down harder.

Civilians running out of options turn to terrorism and gorilla warfare as a last resort.

It's about to get really bad for those troops. They're out numbered heavily. Those protests won't just be protests soon.

It's not really about their targeting system. Temperatures at hypersonic speeds can be insane. You're talking 1000+ deg easy. Sure, you can find materials to withstand those temperatures but then maneuverability becomes a problem. Designing control surfaces to withstand the stress of that type of flow field isn't easy but let's say you do then you can watch your wiring and actuators melt in half a second.

These guys have their generals using their cell phones in the field b/c they can't figure out a secure comm system and they want us to believe they've developed fully functioning hypersonic weapons? Laughable.

I don’t know, the Russian space program is still pretty damned good. I can only assume they still are also good at missile technology, too.

Admittedly, I don’t know that I’d trust whatever guidance system they might have onboard a hypersonic missile. But if it’s designed to more or less fly in a straight line on its terminal attack vector and over relatively short distances they probably can make it work.

Space programs and hypersonic weapons are completely different levels though. You're talking about something the US was able to accomplish in the 60's vs something we're still trying to figure out today.

What the SLS is trying to do and what SpaceX is doing is also completely different things from hypersonic weapons. The problems you're trying to solve are very different.

I think it comes down to simplicity. I would not be at all surprised if they can build a hypersonic weapon that could be launched from right across the border and fly in a more or less straight line and hit a target a relatively short distance away.

That’s a far cry from thinking they are capable of producing a truly advanced weapon that can travel hundreds of miles and change direction to avoid detection or defensive systems.

There's nothing simplistic about a hypersonic weapon. And you don't use them for something a short distance away. They're developed so that they hit the target before air defense systems realize they're coming and can shoot them down. If they're a short distance away then you're not worried about those types of air defense systems.

This (using weapons that do not make sense) is why it might indicate Russia is running out of armaments?
