Per numbers released today, the deficit is up 77% this quarter, while the trade deficit is the highest it's ever been.   I think we can reasonably interpret that as meaning several things: T

The trade deficit and the federal budget deficit are both increasing.  That's exactly the opposite of what Trump said he would do.   No amount of spin changes that.

We'll likely have a Democratic President in 2020, and at some point both those numbers could go down. Then they'll claim that Trump was right, and it was just a lagging indicator. The irony will be lo

Its not just soybean farmers that are getting crushed, Tobacco farmers are really hurting

Speaking of a Socialist dream, who would have EVER thought it'd be Republicans that subsidize these farmers with a handout funded by American Tax-Payers.

Tobacco is NC and Kentucky,... seriously red states,... hmmmm,...

Everyone hates socialism, but loves their piece of government cheese.  Damn welfare recipients! *while doling out millions to corporate farms*

I still do not understand why people think a trade deficit is bad - the implication I get in this thread and normal discussions on the topic.

A trade deficit means you are receiving and consuming more goods than you are giving.  How is that not a good thing?

It would be like kids trading baseball cards and the kid getting more cards is upset???  For some reason I doubt this every happened on an elementary school playground:  A kid receives 5 cards and gives 3 cards with all the cards pretty equal in value and popularity.  I suspect no kid, receiving more cards, every cried, "boo hoo I got 5 cards and Johnny got 3 cards."  Nope never happened, because kids know getting more than you give in a trade is a good thing.  Yet adults have forgotten?????

To a degree, a net-exporting country, with which your country has a trade deficit, is basically a water-down colony of your country.

I take no position one way or the other, and I think the answer is more nuanced than saying they are simply good or bad.

The reason I started the thread is because Trump thinks they are bad, and the whole reason he justified the tariffs, and why the trade war would be good and easy, is due to our large trade deficit with China. And yet, that has increased.

So whether you think the reason for the tariffs (trade deficit too high) and the goal of the tariffs (to reduce the trade deficit) are good or bad, under Trump's own metric the tariffs have been an unqualified failure.

It means despite the "higher" tariffs the economy is so good we aren't being hurt right now.  Again, the game plan isn't to make this a permanent thing.

You should really think a bit before rushing to defend Trump.  You just said raising taxes on businesses, who passes the costs to the consumer, is okay when the economy is good.  That's a fairly liberal position.

Reports earlier were Trump was telling people in his admin "who cares about an exploding debt", I'll be gone!
