Well for anyone who cares to read this, here are my (lengthy) thoughts now that I’ve had a chance to sleep on it.   I’ll start by saying I'm not sure I've ever been more hyped for an episode

I loved the fact that Theon won his fight cause he has no dick. Haha

I don't think he would have given Jon the sword just to keep him at the Wall. I think giving him Longclaw was just about repaying the debt of saving his life. I think that if Jon abandoned the Watch, Mormont would have had Jon executed.

I never said he did. Just that it was yet one more reason. Yes the primary reason was Jon saving his life and his chance to give the sword that was formerly shameful to him a new honorable home.

And of course he would have been hunted down and killed for desertion. Morning pretty much says to himself.

There will be two famous old guys added to the show next season. Ian McShane joins the mostly British cast, they're not saying who he'll play yet.

Max von Sydow replaces some unknown as the 3-eyed raven from the end of season 4 who was part of the roots of the weirwood tree way in the north.

How in the hell is this guy still alive

LOL.  Anyway, I'm shocked that they aren't having him play a bad guy of some sort.  He can be really good in that kind of role.

Just checking his imdb profile, it says he's been in the film industry since 1949.

I just watched the latest season.  Why did it not end last season.  Not sure which was more boring, the characters or stories.  Even the overloaded nudity and dragon were boring. Be nice if they killed all the characters in the last episode.

Last season was pretty flawed and calls into question how capable the show runners really are. Not sure future seasons will be better, as they run out of books to cover and/or have to shift more and more stuff to fit.

The last 2 books were bad. I think the show runners deserve less blame than GRRM in this case. They need better material to work with. We can only hope that he will give them a better story to adapt for TV going forward.

By way of update to our conversation about Valyrian steel, though very rare, it is not QUITE as rare as we thought.  I am a third through A Dance with Dragons on my most recent re-read, and came across this passage:

"There were hundreds of Valyrian longswords in the world, but only a handful of Valyrian arakhs."

But how many were lost in the Doom?
