I think giving him Longclaw was just about repaying the debt of saving his life. I think that if Jon abandoned the Watch, Mormont would have had Jon executed. I never said he did. Just that it was yet one more reason. Yes the primary reason was Jon saving his life and his chance to give the sword that was formerly shameful to him a new honorable home. Ian McShane joins the mostly British cast, they're not saying who he'll play yet. Max von Sydow replaces some unknown as the 3-eyed raven from the end of season 4 who was part of the roots of the weirwood tree way in the north. Not sure which was more boring, the characters or stories. Even the overloaded nudity and dragon were boring. Be nice if they killed all the characters in the last episode. I think the show runners deserve less blame than GRRM in this case. They need better material to work with. We can only hope that he will give them a better story to adapt for TV going forward. I am a third through A Dance with Dragons on my most recent re-read, and came across this passage: "There were hundreds of Valyrian longswords in the world, but only a handful of Valyrian arakhs."
