Callahan gives playcalling to Hardegree (QB Coach)

The irony is that Texan coach Ryan had just handed off calling the defense to his DC I suppose just when we handed off the Offensive play-calling to the QB coach and both results went to the extreme. They doubled their production and we had NO production.

Callahan is essentially fired and they're going to let him ride it out.    This is exactly like Brinker taking over the GM duties Carthon's last season.    Callahan was hired to ca

This move...a non firing but stripping of authority....keeps AAS from being labeled impulsive again.

The funny thing is there wasn't an easier situation for Callahan to keep his job. They decision makers were publicly squashing expectations and talking about patience. He basically had a free pass. Al

I would be willing to bet the bulk of the playaction occurs on these few plays where they are ahead of the chains or just got a new set of downs. But if you do the math they are in 2nd and 3rd and long far too often which negates any chance to run playaction effectively.

I think they are in a death spiral from fear of 3rd and long. They have been in it so much and are so obsessed with not putting ward in that situation it feels like they just admit defeat and run the ball on 2nd down most of the time if they didnt get into 2nd and 5 or less.

I could be wrong, i dont have numbers for it but that is how it feels.

did you see my response to you a few hours ago with the drvie breakdowns? They simply didn't have the ball enough. Now that being said, at a macro view you are spot on. nearly all teams should use Playaction more often. Its a massive advantage and you don't have to be successful in the run game to use, as we've discussed for years on this board.

Louis CK had a great bit about being so broke that you can't even take out the little money you have from a bank account. This is exactly where we are. We are so fucking bad at football that we can't even do the things that would theoretically make our lives easier. It's like being too fat to exercise.

Btw, I fully agree that we need to run more PA. The coaches aren't doing it because they're scared of the OL not holding up. At the same time, the OL isn't holding up anyways so just run the damn PA and see what happens.

Which is the benefit of going with bigger sets and under center. It keeps teams in their base defense.

Our issue on this front is that none of the TEs can block. It was an issue in the Vrabel era too towards the end.

Yeah that was definitely a big oversight. I honestly thought Helm would have an easier transition, but he's been trash as a blocker. We can't have nice things. I still think it would work though. It has worked. We just don't use it.

Helm just lacks weight at 241 and needs to get stronger which is typical for rookie TE. I think he'll get there as a blocker as his frame fills out. Chig,I believe is hopeless in that department and is not long for the roster in general. I agree that we should see relative success. Let's see if Hardigree increases the PA playcalls as he did with the Raiders.

I thought we'd see a lot of sticks, slants,  short outs and drags to manage that.  We've seen almost none of those. I wonder if defenses are sitting on those and daring deeper stuff or if Cam is missing the timing on the short stuff or if his desire for big plays is hampering them to do those regularly.

They need to run way more motion. They’re a pretty static offense, with still a lot of stuff in the pass game from the Bengals under Burrow. They’re asking Ward to sit in shotgun, diagnose a defense pre and post snap with route combinations on both sides. Very difficult for a rookie and his tendency is to pass up easy gains for the bigger play anyway (something Burrow also can do at times!)

They are trying to do more in the screen and RPO game but it’s been a total flop, need to get better on that easy button stuff too

Flip it, what exactly do we have and how many of these guys would start for other teams at their current level?

Can’t be many .  Maybe 15-20 at most.

Right, and it's been this way for years.

They try to hard but they just can’t get past that basic tenet of not being good enough.  I think Gray could develop into a starting level LB.

This is just on their defense (pass).  Generally they do a good job but they just get zero pressure and eventually any OK qb will pick them apart.  I mean there is not much Wilson can do .  The defense can keep them in games for a bit but add in a struggling offense and it’s  not pretty at all.
