There's just no reason to blend the Titans and Oilers identity. It cheapens both. IMO, in addition to new stadium press, this has everything to do with houston chanllenging for the Oilers colors/branding rights fight from last year. I live in Phoenix and every day I see people wearing shirts that advertise that this person has been to Nashville. It's amazing. It's almost like there's a built-in national bandwagon waiting for this team if they were simply the Nashville Titans and they had a good product. The other problem with the 'Tennessee' label is that it wins them no additional fans. People in East TN, want Tennessee associated with the Vols. Hell I'm from Nashville and initially really struggled with that. I firmly believe that potential fans in Alabama and Kentucky are probably much more reluctant to embrace a team called 'Tennessee' than they would 'Nashville'. Perhaps it helps their branding in Memphis but I doubt that too because people in Memphis barely identify with the state of Tennessee as it is.
