Feedback Needed

Hey everyone. As most of you know, I just had my first son and am currently on paternity leave. We've gotten past the first couple weeks of figuring things out and I am in an okay spot to start making some nice improvements around here as outlined here: 

One of the things I was able to do is get a license to an NFL API (thank you to our great Patrons!) with everything from teams to rosters to schedules to stats to news and so on.

 

I have already built most of the bones on the back-end including populating some database tables with all the goodies and scheduled updates.

 

Soon we will have a live schedule, scoreboard, news ticker (since Elon messed up what we had), and a lot more. I also hope to bring back JTB's old salary cap stuff.

 

Where I am at now is designing the front end to the application as it pertains the teams, rosters, statistics, player profiles, and the like.  This is where I could use your help. I would like it to not be boring, so if you have seen any really great looking pages out there that cover these please let me know. For example, I like the player profile layout at https://www.playerprofiler.com/nfl/jahmyr-gibbs/bio/.

 

I am already working on a pretty cool team page with filterable positions, but of course there is a lot more to do there. You can see a VERY EARLY preview here:

I know I can show statistics and results, but I am not completely sure about the legalities of team names, player photos, and some other stuff so I will have to figure that out and adjust things to stay out of trouble.

 

Anyway, please shoot me any great examples you have seen and I will see if they can be used.

 

This also opens up a lot of other great opportunities for some cool stuff like bringing back a better version of the knock-out tournament and stuff. I have a few weeks to do as much as I can before going back to work so I will do as much as I can.

I would love to see some sort of tool where people can go in and grade a specific player after a game, and then it would compile the scores everyone gives to give a community grade on how a player has performed for, say career, season, and last four games.  

 

An overall reputation count and more trophies, I think, could be a cool idea.

 

I love the bet with fake money thing we did a few years ago, and the yearly survivor leagues have been pretty awesome.  Perhaps some sort of page for those, even a separate forum for some of those.  

 

Perhaps some sort of tool where the rest of the community can see how the fantasy league and such are doing and current rankings, I think, could be pretty cool.

 

These are just some ideas off the top of my head.  Hope it helps.

It helps a lot. Appreciate you replying. I think we are on the same page with these. Regarding fantasy, I remember trying something with Sleeper a few months ago and there were some limitations, but I am not sure if those would impact just querying some basic league stuff.

Also, while I'm thinking about it, polls, bold predictions, and or game predictions - a running count ranking members so if you were to predict say 16 games one week and go 10-6 but then add that up over the season and rank highest members would be pretty awesome.

 

So say a board that keeps the rankings over the course of a year:

1. Justafan 112-41

2. Titansguru 111-40

3. etc, etc.

Exactly.  It gives people the ability to put their reputations on the line and a way to reward members who get it right most of the time.  You could even take obvious board narratives like who is going to be the starting QB in 2024, and people could join one narrative or another - similar to how we have a poll, but it's pinned, and then whichever prediction turns out true earns a trophy for everyone brave enough to make that prediction.

Still going here.  I love this.  You could also add a feature where once enough reputation is earned; it gives you the ability to give trophies to other posters.  So if I have a 100 reputation - for example - I earn a trophy, I could hand out for whatever I consider to be a really, really good post, but it's limited by how much rep I've earned.  This incentivizes people to try and earn more rep, and it also rewards people for making good content.

Community power rankings and draft predictions are another idea.  Sorry this is piecemeal but it's just occurring to me as an idea.

@TitansGuru I've always wanted to have a searchable "plays" interface.  Part of what I was thinking about was how to minimize DB costs i.e. spider play by play files to disk and only pay for the search index rather than a DB plus a search engine plus etc.

 

Which API did you license?

I find the site mostly perfect, but the one area I have trouble with is the search feature.  If the search wasent so cumbersome I would call out the fanboys for their nonsense more often.   Otherwise, the enhancements mentioned above sound great

A feature that gives the team's current salary cap status, individual players contract info, present and future salary cap hit, maybe even on their bio page, but it may be more efficient to have a separate salary cap page. We don't want to add too much to your already full plate, though. We realize you have some other people that maybe be needing your expertise.
