At the end of the day the taxes have gone up for residents because of it and the city chipped much much more than they will ever get out of it. Having a sports team is not a successful business venture for cities, I think this has been proven over the course of history basically, so I am always confused why these negotiations are always framed in a way to make it seem like it's a smart financial move for the city... The Mayor said he was not going to publicly subsidize stadiums. Now when they actually lost the team, the Mayor backtracked but it was too late. Justafan Posted April 26, 2023 Report Share Posted April 26, 2023 Nashville is a nice place to visit, has mild weather, will now have a dome, and is rapidly expanding. 22nd largest metro in the country and strategically located. Austin and San Antonio are both bigger but Austin is NOT the travel destination it is made out to be and while I really like San Antonio, I think Nashville is a much better long term opportunity for the NFL. If another city offered them better incentives, they would leave because the majority of their money comes from TV deals anyways. BUT... their second greatest source of revenue comes from hosting events and Nashville is a GREAT city to host large scale events. Both Austin and San Antonio would be fine investments in the short term for the NFL but I think the NFL sees Nashville as a strategic investment. Also, almost every city deals with out of towners and the NFL sells a ton of tickets because of it. Would they rather have a loyal fan base? Sure, but there is a reason the new stadium isn't going to have 100,000+ seats. As long as the seats are sold, who sits in it, really isn't their highest priority regardless of what they might say. Nashville is definitely a case study is how getting a NFL team can jump start investment in a city and lead to success. And this deal is a little different in that it allows the city to activate the east side of the river which has been a wasteland for pretty much as long as I have been here. Or St. Louis. ....and that's really the point.
