Also, housing costs/supply and interest rates have spiked as well. Good news is real wage growth has outpaced inflation for over 12 months now. That’s all true, but lots of people mistakenly believe that we are in a recession and that the stock market is doing badly despite the fact that this is obviously untrue. So why do they mistakenly believe this? Where are they hearing it? OILERMAN

Plus Biden can't even campaign too strongly on it or he risks upsetting progressives (worth it on this topic, imo). It's similar to the record setting energy production vs anti-fossil fuel factions -- good policy benefiting most of America at a crucial moment of high prices, but it's potentially difficult for Biden to tout this win lest he risk discouraging the turnout from progressives. I think he can campaign on it to a degree, but it’s a nuanced message and that always gets lost on most people who only understand soundbites

Yes, but also shows that he isn't tone deaf and is responsive to majority opinion. (I totally disagree with the merits/morality of that EO, but politically it is the right move in an election year given public sentiment)

So why do they mistakenly believe this? Where are they hearing it? I think some hear it on places like Fox, but a lot of people are also remembering what things were like during the 2008 recession and looking around them seeing houses cost 2x what they should with crazy interest rates, food is more expensive, necessities are more expensive, cars are more expensive, travel is more expensive, but no one is making more money and they are just assuming we are in a recession. The country might not technically be in a recession, but the lower and middle class are hurting way more than they have in the last 15 years and there doesn’t appear to be any light at the end. In 2024 you need an income of 100k+ to afford to buy a house which is over a 60% increase from just 4 years ago. When the majority of the country can’t buy the regular things they used to be able to buy, cant justify going out to eat for dinner once in a while, can’t buy a car, can’t buy a house, and can’t afford to even go on vacation once a year. They don’t feel like the economy is doing good. It doesn’t matter what the stock market shows. The actual people who keep the country going are hurting and they will keep hurting until something is done to stop the greed-flation or end the stagnant wage problem this country has had for decades. The stock market isn't the economy. It is ridiculous that people use that as an economic barometer of sorts. heyitsmeallen

On a serious note, 4 years out from covid this news is better than I could have ever imagined not too long ago. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) hit an all-time high Sunday for the number of travelers screened. The agency screened nearly 3 million travelers on June 23, which broke the record for the number of people screened in a single day, the TSA said in an announcement. The record comes ahead of what the agency expects to be a busy travel week ahead of the Fourth of July holiday. TSA is expecting to screen more than 32 million individuals between Thursday, June 27, and Monday, July 8, for the holiday week. This is about 5.4 percent higher than the number of travelers during last year’s Fourth of July season, according to the announcement. “We expect this summer to be our busiest ever and summer travel usually peaks over the Independence Day holiday,” TSA Administrator David Pekoske said in a statement. “Compared to last year, we have cut our attrition rates by almost half and increased our recruiting as a result of the TSA Compensation Plan that was funded in the budget passed by Congress and signed into law by President Biden.” “The traveling public is on the move, which is a sign of a healthy economy,” he added. “We are ready, along with our airline and airport partners, to handle this boost in passenger volumes.” I'm in the tourism industry and it's as busy as I've seen it. People are traveling and spending money one things they don't have to. Surely the poorest among us feel the pressure, but the economy isn't as unhealthy as it's made out to be. Titans279
The economy is unhealthy in some pretty obvious ways even if many indicators are still strong. It’s a weird time. The economic shocks of the pandemic created a strange economic environment. People aren’t insecure in their situation, they aren’t going hungry or unable to afford a roof over their head, but the situation is not really good for a lot of people. They are essentially getting poorer. Edited June 30, 2024 by Titans279 Starkiller, Justafan, IsntLifeFunny, and 1 other
Starkiller
The economy is strong in a macro sense. On a personal level, half (more?) of the country is economically distressed. The voters are feeling the pain. Edited June 30, 2024 by Starkiller

That said, perhaps at the same time more things associated with “moving on up” became unaffordable. Edited June 30, 2024 by begooode
