He came in as chief of staff and brought on Chandler with him. Chandler is probably the least popular SMA since I have been in and Odierno was probably the second least popular Chief of Staff with General Shinseki being more hated for bringing back the ridiculous black beret and then running the VA into the ground. Together they (Odierno and Chandler) waged a war on common sense policies that young Soldiers really cared about and set the Army back 5-10 years in terms of thinking. Worse, he was willing to die on hills that have absolutely nothing to do with readiness or effectiveness in combat such as their disastrous haircut policy that was immediately overturned, the tattoo policy that was overturned as soon as they were replaced, and headgear that no one gives a crap about. He was at Fort Hood as the commander here as well for a while and I have zero trust in any commander that comes out of III Corps lately. He was very vocal about growing the size of the Army to 500k + whereas I would like to see the Army shrink to about 250k and make better use of combat multipliers. He also went to work for JP Morgan after the military which tells you a lot in my opinion. He did bring in SMA Daily who was a breath of fresh air but it doesn't excuse everything else in my opinion. Just my two cents. Btowner, tgo, Number9, and 2 others

Pete is a Navy guy, Army would probably consider that a little awkward! So could be Secretary of the Navy if not UN or NATO Ambassador. I think he'd fit better in the latter two positions. IsntLifeFunny
@Justafan I’ve continued to hear of a lot of underground racism in the police force and in the army. I’m not trying to put you on the spot or anything, but what are your thoughts on the latter if you don’t mind?

I’m not trying to put you on the spot or anything, but what are your thoughts on the latter if you don’t mind? Honestly, I think it's pervasive in the lower ranks and more nuanced in the upper ranks. Just like any other facet of life, everyone has bias. For instance, most of the upper echelons of the Army are run by old white men who tend to think like old white men. Even if they don't mean to, what they envision as the ideal attitude and lifestyle of a leader may not jive with how a minority would see it. I would also point out that there have been real strides by many senior leaders to become more progressive on these issues but the Army is a HUGE organization and any change is incredibly slow. I think sexism is the far more serious issue in the Army. No matter how open minded someone might be outside of the military it is a difficult conversation to have regarding women in the military and specifically the combat arms. I can tell you without any doubt whatsover that I have males in my formation right now that could be easily outperformed by many women but that is not the point. The VAST majority of women will perform poorer than the VAST majority of men in any physical event that requires strength and so many men will use that to erase the fact that some of them can do it. blah blah blah. Speaking for myself though, my primary problems are with Soldiers who have no discipline and break the rules because they feel they are special, overweight or underfit Soldiers, and criminals wearing a uniform. For instance, I have one that got a DUI a few months ago and then a week later I got a call that he had gone to his storage shed to get a gun to kill himself. Called the cops, pinged his location, went over there and stopped it. Got him help with Behavioral Health and took his keys after talking the cops into somehow not arresting him after discharging a weapon inside the storage locker. Fast forward a few weeks and the kid begs for his keys back. His on post driving priveleges were revoked but not his off post. Technically I'm not supposed to withhold the keys because it's personal property so I make the kid work up a plan on how he's going to do this responsibly and work with his supervisor to make sure they have a solid plan in place. I even counseled him that he's command referred to the Army's version of AA and if he fails that program it is an automatic Chapter (Kicked out of the Army). The very next night I get a call that they found him passed out in his vehicle drunk. I have another one that has to check in with the front desk every hour because he's had so many incidents (including popping hot for cocaine), that I can't even trust him to show up for his appointments for therapy so now an NCO has to escort him everywhere. These are the fights i'm fighting. I honestly don't have time for racism, though I'm sure other units deal with it more than I do. chef, pat, 'Nator, and 4 others 4

tgo
Another option for Susan Rice would be if the filibuster is eliminated early on and Washington DC statehood is enacted, Susan Rice could run for Senate and would definitely be the favorite to win. Kamala Harris could either be SCOTUS nominee or AG. Biden is the first person I had heard mention her as a SCOTUS option, and I think she'd be great in that role.
