OILERMAN Blog: Week One

@OILERMAN, CJ is absolutely off to a good start. 70 yards against an elite defense is a good game. Plus you miss the fact that CJ's HR ability makes it easier to go with a run heavy gameplan. Battle and Greene have a role but I doubt you roll out the diamond all game for a lesser back.

You simply don't keep passing against a defense like Pittsburgh. Polamalu was playing like a defensive MVP and you want to give him opportunities to jump routes? No, you run the ball and hit him over and over again. Also a pass heavy gameplan would stop the clock, making the game longer and giving Pittsburgh more time to figure out the Titans blitzes.

Locker and CJ did their jobs in a conservative gameplan designed to beat a team with a great defense and a crappy offense. Locker converted 3rd downs and CJ got positive yardage and stayed in bounds. This was a great sign because this is a gameplan that can go on the road and win. For the first time in years the Titans looked like a team that could control the game.

Basically all the bitching is because the game was ugly. I'll take ugly wins on the road.

Well written.  Keep it up. I disagree with just about everything.

It feels nearly impossible to have any type of discussion regarding performance on a qualitative basis when there's double standards on plays. At a certain point we're just stating players reputations

This week? I don't think there was a clean pocket very often. A clean pocket is Kaepernick standing there holding the ball for 3-4 seconds while his offensive line stonewalls the Packers. A clean pock

i'll take a win period in this case. no one gave us a chance in hell of beating PIT

some of the predictions before the game:

for such a crappy offense, a lot of people picked the steelers to score big on us

I don't think this is a good matchup for Lockers debut in the new offense. His weakness at reading pressure is a bad matchup with LeBeau's blitz packages. I think we will run enough to keep it close for awhile, but an ill timed turnover or two, combined with the Big Ben dissecting of our secondary will leave us at 0-1.

Steelers- 30

Titans - 14

They'll gash us on big run plays and quick bubble screens big ben will have at least 350 yards pasding and i think we'll come out slow and catch fire at the end but it'll be way to late. Steelers 27 Titans 10

Steelers 24

Titans 3

31-17 Steelers. Big Ben goes for over 300 yards passing while Locker has trouble with LeBeau's defense on his way to multiple turnovers.

Steelers 27

Titans 20

Steelers: 31

Titans: 20

Locker KOd in 3rd

A perfect summation of how Locker looked during the game can transcribed from the Texans board about our upcoming game:

http://boards.houstontexans.com/showthread.php?t=37982

Some saw good, some saw bad, just like here - but the consensus was that he looked ok, nothing spectacular, but nothing awful either.  Obviously they're fans, just as we are, and non-Titans fans at that (meaning they're not expected to know as much about our team as we do), but Locker seems to have passed the "he looked ok/decent" eye test to a team that should have every incentive to shoot down/criticize his performance since we're primed in their bullseye for shit-talk.

They are just a bunch of Titans homers.  ;)

The one play that really gave me hope was when Jake stared down a free blitzer on 3rd and long, stayed calm, threw a strike and got hammered. His immediate reaction was to roll and see if he completed the pass.

He has tremendous upside if he can just calm down a little. He seems so amped in the first quarter that he loses his cool. There's no doubt he looked shaky, but there were several very impressive throws. The comeback to Nate on third and long, the play where he climbed the pocket and took a small step left to avoid the blitz (untouched until Leviter cleans him up) and throws a strike to Nate, and the aforementioned play were all plays that many QBs have problems making, especially all three in one game. Btw: Nate Washington is by far the best WR on this team.

LOL, this is hilarious.

If you read this Texans thread, and read threads on this board, you would swear we were talking about two different games

Screw the 49ers WRs...I'd more with the "if Locker had Jim Harbaugh" argument.

Seriously, do people honestly think that if Kaepernick had played in Palmers offense last year, he'd look like he does in SF?

I liked the guy coming out and argued for drafting him, but even I'll admit that it helps a ton when your WRs/TEs are wide open half the game and you can toss balls in triple coverage without the slightest hesitation.

Though, his running instincts are shockingly better than Locker's, and he still throws pretty accurate balls downfield. He definitely stares down WRs though -- everytime I watch a passing play, he looks like he has 1-read then runs.

Kaepernick is already going through multiple progressions and was last year. Just because the 49ers run some pistol doesn't mean he's only has one read on most plays.

Oh yeah, and there's the crucial point that he is deadly accurate with great arm strength.
